Hi. This is my first time doing this so sorry if I do anything wrong. Anyway I was wondering if Stony Brook has a major in geophysics, or I can get a degree in geophysics. I was having a tough time trying to find a definitive answer so I came here. Thanks
Stony Brook does not offer geophysics as a major. However, for a career or graduate work in geophysics or seismology, an undergraduate geosciences degree, with courses or a minor in physics, will usually be equivalent to a geophysics degree. Should you want to major in geophysics as an undergraduate, a few schools do in fact formally offer it.
To add to what merc81 commented. If your intentions are to continue to graduate school, then a geology, earth science or geoscience program should be just fine. Some schools offer a concentration in geophysics or at least a couple of courses on the subject. Whenever you get to school and get settled in just sit down with the geology department advisor and figure out what the best options are. A good chunk of geology programs make students go through Math up to Calc 2 and through physics 2 (calc. based). Adding a math course or two (Calc 3, differential equations, linear algebra) and one or more physics classes to the geology degree would be beneficial. Also, look into a couple programming courses.
A physics major with some geology courses (minor) would be a valid option also. Although, the geology department is way more fun.
