Hey guys, I'm about to end my junior year in high school, so I still have some time, but I've been curious about something.

Stony Brook recently added a School of Journalism. As a NYS resident who plans on dual majoring in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science, I'd love a SUNY school to fall back on in case Syracuse University accepts me but doesn't offer me any financial aid or scholarships.

Does anybody know anything about the new Stony Brook School of Journalism? And if you were offered a full ride to go there and only admission to Syracuse's Newhouse School of Communications, which would you choose?

Thanks a ton!

I am a senior and I’m going to be a journalism major in the fall. I am also from New York so I am familiar with the local options when it comes to J-Schools. I am not very familiar with Stony Brook so I won’t comment on their program. I’ve heard about it, but don’t know much.

I recommend applying to Missouri. Very few people around here know about it, but I just visited over the weekend and I was absolutley blown away. It is consistently ranked in the top 3 J-Schools in the nation and it’s much more reasonably priced than Syracuse. Granted, it’s not SUNY price, but 30k compared to 50k is pretty good. Mizzou’s campus is absolutley awesome and the town surrounding it is great. The journalism program follows what is called “The Missouri Method”, which gives students the opportunity to get hands on training working at real media outlets as a student.

I am choosing between Mizzou and Syracuse. Both seem like great programs. I don’t know much about Stony Brook, but look around at other places too. Penn State has a decent communications program that isn’t too far from NY as well. Check out UNC Chapel Hill (which is very reasonably priced, but so hard to get into out of state).

I’ll definitely have to check out Missouri. Thanks for the heads-up!
