Rejected at Columbia.

sigh

Sorry to hear that GG. Hopefully SAIS will come through for you. I still haven't heard from Columbia. My app wasn't "complete" until January 21st, though, so I'm guessing I won't be hearing at all today...

Thanks for the insight on Columbia, GG. I'm sorry you didn't get in. I hope your other options work out for you. I haven't gotten anything from Columbia yet, so I'm a little nervous......

Hey Mikko...did you apply early or late? I don't think it means anything to not have heard today, since it seems people received a mix of acceptances, waitlists, and rejections. It probably has more to do with when you applied and when your app was complete, I'm guessing...

decided - Well, my portion of the application was submitted in mid December. One of my references didn't get in until January 8, so I guess it wasn't technically complete until then. I guess they're parceling out the acceptances/rejections. I'd just rather get an answer and be done with it!

Just heard. Accepted! No money, but so excited! I guess they're parceling them out throughout the day, even.

Congrats on your acceptance. Are you definitely going to take their offer?

I just found out I've been waitlisted. The fun continues for me! D

Well, in light of my rejection I'll congratulate you both!

I wonder to what extent the acceptance pool of SIPA overlaps with SAIS and G-town? I'm a little pessimistic about my chances at either place given this result.

Thanks GG. I wouldn't be too worried about your chances. There are plenty of cases on the forums from previous years in which people got into SIPA and didn't get into SAIS (or vice versa). It seems to be quite a crapshoot, as far as I can tell. Your stats are great, so I'm sure you'll get into one of them.

I applied to both schools, though SFS at G-town (you applied to SSP, right?). It'll be interesting to see...

Mikko, Columbia is one of my top choices, but not necessarily my top choice. I'm going to have to wait and see where else I get in (if anywhere). Best of luck on the waitlist! From what I hear, Columbia uses it extensively, so your chances of getting off it should be pretty good.

Thanks for your confidence. That's good to hear. Still, though, I'm concerned that beyond the stats I'm a fairly vanilla candidate. SIPA, at least, keeps you letters of rec. for two years and allows you to re-apply by simply supplementing your materials. Considering my stats aren't going anywhere, that's a fair motivation to get off my ass and get some interesting experience if I don't get in anywhere.*

And yes, I applied to SSP, which gives me some hope. I was also concerned that my applications failed to communicate a clear drive or trajectory; perhaps foregoing the application to SFS for SSP will evidence that.

Keep you fingers crossed for me!

*He says as though he didn't apply to these schools because interest work was hard to find in the first place.

Waitlisted at SIPA too...congrats to acceptees, and condolences to the rejected....without any funding SIPA is pretty much out for me, but I may stay on the waitlist to see what happens..maybe external funding will come through....doesn't bode well for my chances at my top choices (SAIS and especially Yale!!)....anyone know when to expect decisions from either?

Gopher, et al. I'm sorry to hear about SIPA. I have no idea what the overlap is, but good luck with SAIS and SSP! SAIS admits by concentration area, doesn't it? I imagine that makes it much more difficult to predict, but we do know ID is super-competitive.

Rory, which program at Yale? I'm an applicant to the African Studies program at MacMillan, and I have no idea when decisions will be made. I applied for the FLAS funding there a couple weeks ago; maybe they try to get all the funding figured out before releasing decisions at all?

Hello all. I just found out about this forum, and it looks like many of you are in the same boat as me. I have applied to masters programs in international affairs at SAIS, Georgetown, Tufts, Columbia and Harvard. So far I have been accepted at Tufts (Fletcher School) and am waiting on all the rest.

It seems like many of you heard back from Columbia yesterday, but I am still waiting. My application was complete in mid-December, so I don't think my lack of notification is related to that. At the same time, it seems like the results yesterday were very mixed, so I am not too worried. Hopefully it will come today! Otherwise I may have to keep on waiting for a while.

Question for everyone (since we're all applying to the same general programs):

I've been anxiously waiting to hear from the two programs I applied to, so I compulsively checked the application site last week - only to find out that one of my applications was listed as incomplete. Turns out that either ETS never forwarded my GRE scores (even though said school is listed on my score report) or somehow my scores never made it into my record. I notified the school, and the very nice woman who responded asked me to fax my scores. My record is now listed as complete.

So here's the question: I submitted my application on 22 Jan (deadline was 1 Feb), but it wasn't officially complete until 4 Mar. Do you think I'll be considered as part of the original applicant pool, or will I get rolled into the "space available" group?

Hey AfricanStudies08,

I applied to the International Relations program....on another website yesterday about 4 people posted rejections, hopefully that means I'll be hearing either way soon enough....no posting about African Studies, I'm afraid...can't do much at this point except hope the decisions come out sooner rather than later...its the waiting that kills me....

I applied to Yale IR, too. Haven't heard anything yet. I read on another board that they send rejections by e-mail/website, and waitlists and acceptances via post. Not sure if that's true, though. Is it one of your top choices, Rory? It looks like a great program academically. Not sure how well it stacks up pre-professionally/career-wise compared to the more "traditional" programs...I'm looking around for employment records.

Jata,

Not sure, but something similar happened to me at SAIS. I was notified the day after the deadline that my CV was missing (swore I upoloaded it and that it was checked off before I hit 'submit'). The letter told me I'd be kicked to the "space available" group, but at some point I got the impression I'd be restored to the regular group. Not sure why. Wish I could be more help...

Yeah, I had the same thing with me and my transcript gopher. I didn't really care all that much b/c I wasn't really counting on getting in anyways. But then I was sort of led to believe I was restored as well...who knows.

Still waiting to hear back from Columbia SIPA... Anyone else in the same situation?

Rory, I got an e-mail from Yale Grad Admissions today, instructing me to log onto the application site for the decision. Surprisingly, it was an acceptance-- I kind of assumed it would be a rejection, and that the department would notify acceptances. It contained no information about the FLAS or about funding. Maybe this all applies only to African Studies? Weird that automatic e-mail decisions are spread out over several days for MacMillan-related programs.
