I applied to transfer to CAS and found out today that I was accepted.

I was told, however, that my acceptance was contingent on agreeing to spend my first semester in Prague, London, or Florence. Why is this? Is it a housing crunch?

I was sort of set on studying abroad in Shanghai sometime in junior year, but I probably will accept this.

Anyone know if there's anyway around it?

It is a housing issue. I read an interview with the NYU President in The Villager newspaper where he basically states that the study abroad programs is a way NYU has to enroll the number of students they enroll with the housing resources they have.

I don't know if there's any way around it unless, maybe, you don't need housing in NY.

I got this decision, too! Anyone have any idea how many students were given this offer? I'd love to go abroad this fall but I only have 5 semesters left total, and I'm worried about breaking it up.

NYU wants more $$ as always, but they cannot fit all the students that can pay them. So what's the next best thing? Involuntarily sending them to other countries. Its not a bad deal if you really want to go to NYU for manhatten and end up in some foreign city... more seriously though, it's not too bad. Go to Florence, it has a huge party scene. No way around it. Plenty of girls in florence though. Can't go wrong.
