Hey all, I'm applying RD, and am interested in Cornell's Government department/major.

How does Cornell's government department stack up against the other ivies (particularly penn and dartmouth)

I’m a Government major. There are four main fields in the department-- American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Theory. It depends on which one you’re looking into, but as a whole the department is quite strong and has two past Presidents of the American Political Science Association (Katzenstein and Lowi).

Research-wise Cornell is obviously a lot stronger than Dartmouth and stronger than Penn. This isn’t something that particularly affects you as an undergraduate, however. Quality of instruction is highly variable per instructor as it is everywhere. I’ve had great Professors (Patel, Katzenstein, Van De Walle, Levine) and not-so-great ones.

I’m interested in in international relations. How’s specifically that program?

That’s the strongest of the four areas, and International Political Economy is particularly strong here. Katzenstein is highly recommended.

Great, hopefully everything works out!
