I'm really interested at applying to Johns Hopkins and studying International Relations, most likely with a double major in East Asian studies.

I always hear tons of stuff about how stressful and competitive Hopkins is, but people always seem to be talking about the BME program, or premed.

So I'm just wondering, is this true of all programs at Hopkins? Specifically for IR, would it be this competitive and stressful?

I wouldn’t say there is any more stress at JHU than any of the top schools (Duke, Penn, Dartmouth, etc) especially in the Social Sciences. The program is well-known and great. If you want to do the 5-year BA/Master’s Program with SAIS in DC, that’s challenging to get into when you’re at Hopkins but otherwise, I think it’s traditionally demanding for a top school but not more.

How dedicated are the international affairs/linguistics professors to teaching as opposed to research? JHU has an amazing reputation as a research institution, which definitely seems to be true for the sciences, but what about the ir/linguistics/humanities department? I don’t really know what kind of research you can do in those fields…but how interested are the faculty in teaching as opposed to researching/publishing? Thank you!

Incredible teachers. Lots of research in diplomacy, international policy, etc.
