If you are considering this for mental health reasons I think it is a great idea. My D went to college with mental health issues. In my heart I knew she wasn’t ready for college but for reasons I won’t go into she went anyway. Fast forward 5 semesters—she had failed one course each semester, her mental health had deteriorated even more, substance abuse issues complicated the problem, and we pulled her out of school. We wasted a lot of time and money. By this point she needed intensive residential therapy to get back on her feet. She missed 3 full semesters of college. Today she is back in school full time—a different school, a different major. She is doing GREAT. As her mental health improved she took some courses at a local community college so she ended up picking up 9 credits before re-enrolling. I have no idea what your issues are but college is not a good place to work through mental health issues. If you have the opportunity to work though them before you go I recommend it. Take some classes at a local community college if you’re worried about being out of academia for a year.
Life is a journey, not a race. School will always be there. Jobs will always be there. Don’t worry about “losing” a year. If you are growing and healing you’re not losing, you’re winning. Take you time and do what’s right for you and don’t worry about artificial timetables.
