Stressing out about which college to go to

http://home.fredonia.edu/finaid/first-year-scholarship-opportunities

SUNY Fredonia has some $4,000 -$8,000 science/math scholarships

Freedom is is an amazing place. One of my former students is there now as a pre-med. thanks @mommdc , I just gave him the ones off of the top of my head.

^came across it by accident the other day and remembered they had higher amounts for science majors.

UPDATE: Binghamton just sent me their aid and I got a whopping 13k in grants, meaning my net price is about 12K.

Well, that “net cost” is likely LESS than what UVM would cost.

You got a full Pell Grant and likely a TAP grant, is that correct?

If you think that aid is bad, wait until you see UVMs. You might get a larger grant, but since the cost is MUCH higher, the net cost will likely be a lot higher than Bing’s.

How much can you earn/save over the summer?

Can your parents contribute anything towards college?

Where else did you apply?

Ok, you got full tap and full pell. That is ~11k then you got a SUNY tuition credit.
What else did you get?
That is all of the free money that you are going to get from SUNY unless you can get a scholarship ( your stats will not get you a scholarship at bing.

You still have your $5500 loan. This means now 18k of your expenses are covered.
Do you have work study in your package ?

With the exception of CUNY, you are not going are not going to get a financial aid package with out loans (especially if you plan on going away).

What are your direct costs: tuition fees room and board? Focus on how you are going to get that paid. As I told you in my previous post, if you want to go away, you are going to have to get a job and work like dog, now and over the summer to make up the short fall. .

If you think you are going to get a more generous package from UVM where you will have to pay less, I can sell you the Brooklyn Bridge on the cheap.

If you don’t want to work toward making SUNY happen, if you don’t want to submit a few more SUNY schools through the common app where you can get a fee waiver and you have the possibility of getting some scholarship money, ( you may have to pay for Fredonia because it goes through the SUNY portal ) then my dear you will be attending your affordable option, CUNY (nothing wrong with that)

At the end of the day you are going where your money will take you. You may have to step down a notch at SUNY to get the scholarship you need if you want to go away. You will not get scholarship money at Bing, Stony Brook, albany or UB (SAT scores are too low)

Where else did you apply in NYS?

This is the last college recommendation that I am making to you (after this like shark tank, I am out) :

Toss an application this weekend to SUNY ESF through the common app.

They are directly across the street from SUNY Upstate Medical Center (which will provide you opportunities to ob shadow and do research as a pre-med student), while being next door to Syracuse University (where you can take up to 15 credits at Syracuse without paying extra). They have some great dorms with some amazing stickley furniture.

Then you are going to see your counselor first thing Monday so that s/he can grovel to to your ESF regional admissions person to ask if you can still be considered for a scholarship because your application is late (was due on 2/1)

If you can get him/her to do some heavy duty groveling, find out if you can be considered for the joint BS/MD program (you have the stats). The deadline for this is right before we left for regents. While you are not from a rural community, the school is trying to recruit more down state kids.

Please go into the common app and apply free to all the SUNYs mentioned. And ESF.

Fredonia scholarship link says you can apply through SUNY application or common app.

Like Sybbie said, if you got Pell, TAP, loan, work earnings, scholarship, you might have enough.

What you do as a premed, and GPA, MCAT scores matter more than where you attend undergrad.

And some of these schools offer scholarships for your stats, hopefully it is not too late to qualify. They also have research opportunities.
