Strong Lib. Arts Schools with Strong Theatre Programs

Hey, all. I'm a recently-graduated HS senior with the following scores:

SAT I: CR - 750, M - 610, W - 730
SAT II: US History - 750, Lit - 720
AP: US History - 5

Weighted GPA (out of 9): 7.72

I aim to double-major in theatre and philosophy, and have an interest in acting, playwriting, and directing. I applied to several schools for this fall, and was accepted into Connecticut College, Trinity College, Skidmore College, and the University of Rochester, and waitlisted from Colby and Bates. My parents, however, are Rochester alumni, and I was pressured into attending there this fall. I'd like to have a few schools to look into transferring to going it, so that I can essentially make an exit strategy. What schools out there are at my academic level but have strong theatre programs? Please note, I'm not looking for conservatory programs.

Thanks in advance!

I’m looking into Bennington, which is outstanding. And I’ve heard that Bard is quite good in that respect, but haven’t investigated myself as I don’t plan to apply.

Hi, Lysean - First of all, be aware that when reviewing the applications of transfer students, the schools will focus heavily on your academic performance during your freshman year in college. So take serious courses, and do your best.

Your history suggests that you are interested in remaining in the northeast, but is that the case? For now, I would say that Connecticut College would in fact be a good fit. You may also want to consider Case Western Reserve (I know they have acting, not sure about the rest), and possibly Sarah Lawrence.

Other people on this board will probably be able to provide some suggestions, but you should also browse around here, as there have been several threads on this topic.

Best regards, and good luck.

why don’t you contact one of the schools that accepted you and see if they’ll take you for the fall? Tell them your situation and see what they say! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Per sdoncc’s suggestion that you contact one of the schools that you were accepted at to see if there are any openings, have you looked at the thread regarding selective schools that will allow me to double major? You will see that one of the school’s you were accepted at, Skidmore, was mentioned in several postings. Also, if you do start at U of R, you may find that it is a good fit and that there are theater opportunities there for you. If not, there are some threads you may want to review on transfering to a theater program. You noted that you are not interested in a conservatory style program - does that mean you are not interested in an audition-based program? There also are some threads on transferring to an audition-based program that highlight the fact that the transferring student most likely will be starting as a freshman.

you should be able to double major at any of the schools you were already accepted to. Most BA programs allow for double majors.

out of curiousity, I checked out Rochester. no, it doesn’t have a theater major, but it does look like it offers alot of interesting opportunities. It sounds like you’d have plenty of performance and other theater training options there, so I hope that if you do go there, you’ll do so with an open mind. You might find that you like being a big fish in a smaller pond, rather than going to a school “known” for the arts where the casting may be more competitive. I also clicked on the post-grad paths some of the students took, and some were in theater.
