I was admitted to UCSD as a transfer student for structural engineering.

I am wondering if this field is the right choice for me. What is the demand for structural(civil) engineers in today's society?

I heard that a masters in structural engineering is Preferred by big companies.

Is a BS in electrical engineering a safer choice than a BS in structual?

All I want is a BS in a field that is stable.

Ucsd’s SE program is very geared towards those who want to pursue a graduate degree. The demand for structural engineers with a BS is almost nonexistent in San Diego, though there are good opportunities if you want to go into project management or manufacturing.

I would highly recommend getting a master’s degree if you want to be a structural engineer. There are just too many things to learn if you get only a BS. Design of wood, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, masonry, steel, etc., besides having to learn a LOT of theoretical material to understand seismic design. I would never want to hire someone with only a BS degree, unless as Experiment8 mentions, you work in project management, construction management, or manufacturing.
