Studen/Spouse Taxes 08??

My Stepdaughter filled out the fafsa, and her school has a few requirements she has to fill out.

2009-10 Dependent Student Verification Worksheet
Signed copy of Parents tax returns for 2008
Signed copy of Student and Spouse 2008 tax returns
Title IV Authorization form

I get the Student verification & Authorization form, but she doesn't have a spouse, and during that section she did what it said and marked 0/left blank. So why are they asking to see spouse returns. She's single/never married and never even had a job! I asked the people at fafsa, and they said that nothing is wrong with the app. But I don't know...you think maybe the school screwed something up?

And before you all say that I need to ask the school, we plan to, once some personal things get sorted. And since they don't give financial information over the phone, I thought I would come to you all for potential advice.

Just write on the form that she did not file a tax return and that she has no spouse. We have been verified several times (both kids have been twice). The forms are a standard form that is sent to everyone and may include things that do not apply to every person. For instance on ours they ask for a W2 for my husband who is retired and has no W2s - so we just make a note of that on the verification form.

The people at FAFSA have nothing to to with the verification process. Even though you may (or may not) be randomly selected on the FAFSA form for verification, it is the school who ultimately decide who to verify. If you have concerns you need to call the school - calling the FAFSA phone number will be a waste of time in this instance.

Ah! Thanks so much. That puts me at ease. And I was referring to the school when I said they don’t give information.
In the finaid letter they state “Federal law prohibits discussing by telephone any information contained in a student’s file.”
Thanks so much, again!
