Student Activities?

The other schools I visited impressed me with their emphasis on student activities like clubs, intramural sports, etc. Can any current or former U of Maryand student comment on how prevalent these activities are there? I'd be especially interested in politically active groups, which I'd assume are common at UMD. Just looking for some details...
Thanks in advance for any help.

We have intramural sports that run in both semesters. Right now indoor soccer is going on at Cole Field House and last semester there was soccer and flag football. All of the clubs are listed at stars.umd.edu but there aren't any details aside from the basics.

I can't really comment on the politically active groups.

Many of the dorms have un-official intramural sports. DS played football, it was just their dorm playing and teams were made by floors. This has been going on for yrs...when Bullet was there in the late 80's he also played dorm football. They also play frisbee and soccer. You will easily be able to set up your own dorm games. Somebody will always have a love for something and take the initative..they even had secret santa, now they are doing it again for valentines day(platonic gifts).

As far as political groups, I know they exist, many kids volunteered for Obama and McCains campaign. However, I would think that this is a small subset and once you get there you'll find the group that fits...if you are govt poli sci major it won't be hard to find any groups. Also if you are honors, gemstone or scholars you will be with them every week in seminars. I know for DS between the classes and seminars and living with them (Scholars) he likes to just veg at the end of the day(play xbox, hang with friends, go to the games BBall now)...it can become overload. His roommate is hardcore and never stops wanting to discuss politics (even at parties, during xmas break he sent daily political news updates to people), people now after 1 semester are asking our DS how can you room with him? It's great you want to be involved with our govt, but make sure you don't become obsessed with it, afterall, the majority of college kids want to be just that...KIDS.

Haha thanks for the feedback. I've grown up in a family with completely opposite political views from mine, so I've gotten pretty good at keeping my mouth shut. I will be a gov't and politics major so it seems like it shouldn't be too hard to find something. I have been looking forward to moving to washington for years now, both of my top schools are inside the beltway, so i'm hoping to take advantage of that opportunity. Again, thanks for the responses.

I can't say for sure about College republicans, except that I definitely know they do have clubs if you're interested, but in terms of College Democrats, I'm not very involved, but its been great. I went to a few lectures, and campaigned once, everyone seemed very nice, and it was all very interesting. and I haven't gone, but I do know members go to Annapolis sometimes.
Another 'political' group I guess is UMD for cleaner energy. they do stuff concerned with educating about conservation, but they do lobbying too, if that interests you at all.
So i know i'm not the best person to answer your question, but I wanted to let you know options are there, and they are accessible
:) K hope that helped!! Go terps!
