Other than going to classes what do you do with your free time other than going to class and studying/homework? Please elaborate deeply. Im trying to find stuff to do. So far, it seems people have told me really boring stuff that seems like more work (student government clubs, etc.)

Sporting events? Find people that enjoy similar hobbies and join clubs related to said hobbies. Really what people do with their free time is going to vary greatly.

Just do the things you enjoy doing!

Yeah dude. Its basically the real world. You fill your time the way you see fit.

Alright but I scrolled through the clubs and considered going to events; they seem like more work and/or boring. I enjoy playing video games and stuff but I want to do something else like meet girls and meet some friends. Any thoughts?

There are definitely a lot of video game related clubs at UMD. A lot of clubs are academic because students use those extracurricular activities to pad their stats for medical school, law school, graduate school, or their resume. Try to be one club that has a similarity to your major. It will be helpful in the future. There are so many things to do at Maryland and around the area.

OP, many of my friends and I are usually more concerned about having enough free time to do the things we want to do. I spend much of my free time doing things that are important to me and/or are relevant to my future career goals.

I am currently an officer in my music fraternity,
a section editor for a campus research journal,
play in a campus band (I actually get 1 semester credit for this)
volunteer at Children’s Hospital at least once a week, and
I’m also a recruitment ambassador for the College of my major.

I also love to attend campus events, such as special guest lecturers/speakers and entertainers. For example, I recently acquired free tickets to see Todd Rundgren in concert at CSPAC and I have (free)tickets to see the Dalai Lama. Monitor announcements for when these free event tickets will be disbursed. They don’t last long. There are also many paid events (I recently saw John Oliver perform ).

There is a bowling alley in Stamp, and a first class center (Eppley) if you like to work out/run/swim during all seasons. Do you like to dance? (salsa, ballroom, other) Do you like to cook? There is a student run food coop in Stamp where you can volunteer or work for food/$.

The point is, at a large university, the options are almost limitless. There’s never enough time to do all the things I would like :)

Because you leave the question so open-ended, its hard to properly answer your question without people getting into their own personal interests. Like I personally enjoy video games and music, just to name a couple of things but information on these forms of clubs and activities would do you no good if you don’t share the interest.

A better way to attack this question of yours would be for you to ask about specific forms of entertainment and recreation that you have in mind and we can let you know if UMD has it, should we know ourselves.

Hi guys,
Im finishing up my Junior year this spring as a Gen Bio major. Im kind of burned out from the premed classes I take. I used to join a lot of academic clubs in high school for padding but thats precisely why I dont want to join in college. They feel like more work and not much fun. Many clubs to me just seem like a huge amount of energy I need to put in to walk there, and actively participate, when I already feeled burned out mentally from courses. I occasionally see good looking girls walking around campus and feel slightly depressed since I feel I am wasting opportunities I could be meeting girls but Im just sitting in my dorm the entire weekend starting friday afternoon on my computer. I scroll through the list of clubs and just dont see these good looking girls to go to such clubs from the photos of the clubs and stuff. So Im at a loss of where to actually meet these girls without it being creepy. I know one would suggest frats and sororities but thats just not my thing. I am not Caucasian, Super buff, or a “bro” and I know you can tell me you don’t have to be these things to join but thats just the stigma I see from it from my experience. Once again, the whole frat thing seems like the whole concept of putting in more time and energy that I dont have into something that seems like more work than fun. I have rushed a few honors frats and I just didn’t click with the members. They were all nice enough to be acquaintances but I knew we would never be close friends and i didnt want to keep putting up the fake nice person persona. (and thats another reason)
