Student Activity List question

My one friend was saying that they were going to lie on their Activity List and say they were in a club for all four years (when they were actually in the club for only two years). My other friend said not to do that because the college would know.

So they were arguing about it and then they asked me. I had no clue.

Would a college know if a student lied about how many years he/she was involved in a club? Thanks

That would be dishonest. It also could contradict the counselor’s rec or something, so they might find out, but yeah. Don’t be a square.

My rule of thumb when it comes to lying about ECs is, if it’s easy to get away with it’s probably not worth doing. While no one’s probably going to check on whether you were in the French club for 2 years or 4 years, no one’s going to be blown away by those extra 2 years either. In fact it could even backfire on you in that AOs might wonder why, with involvement all 4 years, you didn’t have a leadership position (or a bigger one) junior and/or senior year.

On the other hand, if you lie about something that might actually impress the admissions committee you run the risk that someone on the committee will be knowledgeable enough about the area to catch you, or that another applicant will hold the position or award you’re claiming.

A final word-some schools do choose a random sampling of applications to audit and if you are caught lying you can kiss any chances of admission to that school goodbye. Bottom line, it’s really not worth it.
