Student Apartments for Freshmen?

I’ve been looking at the housing options that are available to freshmen at MSU, considering they are required to live on campus their first year. I came across these student apartments on their site: http://liveon.msu.edu/apartments/single-student-apartments. First off, are freshmen allowed to stay in these apartments as they are on campus I believe? Or is there some rule (like I have found at other colleges) where only upperclassmen can stay in apartments and the freshmen are restricted to dorms? Also, what does it mean when it says “single bedroom” under rates? Does this mean you will be the only one living in the whole unit and you will not be sharing kitchens, bathrooms. etc with anyone else? Or is it where you have a bedroom to yourself that opens into an adjoining space you share with others? Thank you!

@jt216 I don’t know the answer for sure, but I doubt that freshmen would be allowed to live in single-student apartments, absent some compelling need. I looked at your link and the new 1855 Place apartments look very nice, but they won’t be available until 2017. Spartan Village is being demolished over time as new developments like 1855 Place come on line. University Village states that it is available only for Sophomores and above. Finally, as a general practice, upper-class students get first priority, so a freshman would have a hard time getting a one-bedroom unit, even if it were available.

Based on some of your other posts, you seem pretty interested in living by yourself. I don’t recommend this, at least for a few years. Part of the college experience wherever you go will be learning how to get along with others away from home. If you live by yourself, you would miss out on this important part of growing up, and also miss out meeting new people from all walks of life, both as roommates, suite mates, and fellow dorm floor residents. You are likely to make new friends that you will cherish for the rest of your life. I am 66 years old and still keep in touch with some friends I met at MSU in Wonders Hall, back when we still rode horses to class.

BYW, my youngest son is heading up to MSU this weekend for the ADS competition. He is also plans to study Mechanical Engineering. He has not yet chosen MSU (tied with Iowa State) and I would not presume to pressure him in one direction or another. (But I hope he goes Green!)

Good luck whatever you decide.
