And so far no statement, at all, by University president. There seems to be no justification possible for beating up a student for using a fake id, so that he needs 10 stitches; the video is shocking. I went to UVA for graduate school; I am ashamed of it. No way my kid is going there.
@marysidney there was a statement from the President. Part of it was quoted in the article. Her statement mentioned that she was the one who brought it to the attention of the Gov.
All afternoon, no statement. If she finally released one, at 5 pm, it’s pretty darned late in the game. This incident happened last night; it was all over twitter, all day. This is an honor student, a leader of the Black community, an important voice on campus–and most importantly, a UVA student who was obviously treated badly by the same people who terrified a student a couple of years ago.
In the past “obvious” situations at UVA have proven to be different than originally thought.
According to the Cavalier Daily (http://www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2015/03/university-student-honor-committee-member-martese-johnson-arrested), “Johnson was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, obstructing justice without threats of force, and profane swearing or intoxication in public.” Resisting arrest will sometimes get you 10 stitches.
I think TomSr has it right. I look forward to seeing the facts on this over the next several days and weeks.
charges don’t mean truth, either; cops can claim whatever they want when they want to justify beating a kid up. 10 stitches means excessive force, period. It’s not rushing to judgment to say the atmosphere at UVA seems toxic.
It was not “cops” who made this arrest. ABC agents. 10 stiches could mean a drunk slammed his head somewhere prior to the encounter with the agents. Who knows at this point? I think people should wait and see all the facts before becoming outraged. The video they showed on local news(in Virginia) showed the student resisting and cursing I suppose because every second word he uttered was bleeped. He was saying " bleep bleep you bleep bleepity bleeps I’m a Virginia student!") I don’t understand why students were marching in protest at the Charlottesville PD when the agency involved was the ABC.
Actually, the ABC issued a statement that they inflicted the injuries when they arrested him
@OspreyCV22 Just to nitpick your nitpicking
Miriam-Webster defines “cops” as “police officers”. It defines “police officer” as
PS- I am not arguing that “agents” is wrong, just that “police” or “cops” is equally correct
It doesn’t seem he was in possession of a fake. His arrest warrant shows two misdemeanors.

Virginia law requires any establishment that serves alcohol to serve a certain amount of food as well - so some establishments permit underage individuals inside with a special handstamp or the like to prevent them from purchasing alcohol. I too am interested in seeing how the facts develop.
The staffer of the business who saw the whole thing unfold was quoted as saying that it was unjustified police brutality.
Pres. Sullivan made a strong statement within 18 hours. I wouldn’t want a University president having an instant knee-jerk reaction without having some basic facts.
MarySidney, to be honest you’re the one rushing to judgement here. Let the facts come out this time. UVA does not have a toxic environment; my child is very happy there. She has been healthy, she has not been gang raped, and she has not been attacked. This situation looks alarming; that alarm has warranted investigation. Let’s see what unfolds. The student was not on Grounds and the UVA police were not the culprits. By all means though, keep your snowflake at home. There are thousands of others anxious to go to UVA.
Interesting that the victim is a member of the Honor Committee (reported by Cavalier Daily). Hope he wasn’t using a fake ID.
I can’t imagine that he was using a fake ID since he wasn’t charged with that offense. Also, his roommate has been quoted as saying that Johnson did not own a fake ID.
The first thing I learned as a knucklehead intoxicated youth was to never mouth off to police or anyone else who had the authority to arrest you. As drunken students we knew that if a cop was sighted we would: 1) walk quietly past the officer, 2) walk in a straight line, 3) not breathe toward the officer. In other words we wanted to stay off their radar and make sure they didn’t notice us as potential trouble. Unfortunately, intoxication sometimes causes one to do stupid things. I’m sure the ABC agents have been trying to reduce underage drinking in that area after the abduction. If you try and commit a crime (drinking) you have to know that you may be arrested. At some point it’s best to just submit and learn your lesson. Unfortunately this kid learned something from the school of hard knocks. It’s unfortunate but luckily he wasn’t hurt badly ( concussion or knocked out teeth). We would all like for enforcement officials to use the minimal amount of force necessary to effect an arrest.
I’m not sure why MarySidney you are ashamed of the school when the incident occurred off-campus by an agency that is not affiliated in any way with UVA.
The incident was covered well on CNN with Anderson Cooper tonight. It was said he was talking outside of a bar when the Alcohol agents picked him out, and demanded to see his ID. He showed his real Illinois license. The agent asked for his zip code, and he gave one that was different than the license - because his family had recently moved within Illinois.
The agent then took him down and smashed his head into the sidewalk.
He reportedly wasn’t even found drunk based upon a breathilizer test taken after they had arrested him and taken him to a police station.
He was arrested for using profanity. (I hope John Oliver is not next).
All of the witnesses say he did not resist arrest.
The ironic thing is - not only was his ID real, but it didn’t even show he was 21. It included his real age of 20.
Hey, you ABC stormtroopers, who would buy a fake ID that says they are 20 years old?
