Student Body

Can anyone describe the "typical" student who attends Scripps?

i'm wondering the same thing.

what I found most surprising about Scripps is that because it is a woman's college, you get every type of woman. You get the jock type, the preppy type, the serious type, the partying type, etc. I mean, it is hard to stereotype a person because some women can transcend all of these "types" and be a jock and a prep and a partier and be serious, but I am stereotyping just for the sake of this question. Because there are just so many women around, you get a chance to meet all kinds of women - if you were to attend a men's college, you would get to experience all types of men as well. Basically, the women are well-rounded, smart, go-getters and hard workers. They know how to have a good time but they also know their boundaries. They are respectful and excited about meeting people. Once in a while I will meet a snooty girl who thinks she knows everything, but this isn't necessarily distinctive to Scripps - you meet people like that no matter where you go. You just learn to ignore the women like that - everyone is smart, otherwise they wouldn't all be there.

It is a little cliche, but I totally agree with MissLovelyRita. Each of the Claremont schools has a stereotype, but Scripps was always the difficult one to place. What I found is that it really had a mix of all the schools' "types," with common threads being a general appreciation of Scripps' policies and atmosphere, or in women's colleges in general. But in general, students are interested an engaged (yes, like all brochures claim) in their studies, typically liberal (or at least tolerant of liberal views), and highly ambitious (more in the "I'm going to change the world" sense than in the "I'm going to be an investment banker and make millions" sense). None of this is to say that you won't find hardcore republicans or future I-bankers...they're only generalities. On the whole, all stereotypes are tempered by the consortium environment..."jocks" can go to HMC knowing that they have CMS, "math nerds" can go to Pitzer knowing that they have Mudd across the street, and so forth. I found a little of everything, and what evaded me at Scripps, I always found at other schools. But intelligent, ambitious, engaged, involved, busy, "globally conscious," and liberal (sometimes to the point of fault, but only in the minority)...these pervaded campus life.

I agree with the above.

Scripps is hard to classify because of its uniqueness as a women's college which draws people from everywhere and everytype. I love scripps because of the diversity in background and personality, it is much more multi-dimensional than the other school's reputations because of that. Some people have the conception that scripps is predominantly homosexual, or that we are whores. But that is complete BS. Sure there are some here like everywhere, but they may be more visible and overt due because everyone is accepting and friendly. This sounds a bit harsh, and crude. Sorry. I love my school and want to lay some of the stereotypes to rest.

Scrippsies are kind, thoughtful, welcoming, friendly, funny, intellectual, engaged...
