Student Body

How would you describe Davidson's student body?

Is Davidson "progressive" or more preppy?

Not progressive in the Wesleyan sense; more preppy in the Williams/Dartmouth style.

i heard that its more conservative than many colleges. Any truth to that?

I think it is more balanced than many colleges; that does make it more conservative. In real-world terms it is fairly liberal; in CC terms it probably is conservative. It has both Democrats and Republicans among its students and parents. By academic standards that in itself is conservative.

There is an undeniable undercurrent of conservatism but a many students who think that they are liberal. It's all based on perception

Well, would someone who is undeniably a raging liberal feel comfortable there?

I know another poster said that they felt students at Davidson were more open and friendly than Williams students. I've heard another person say something about Dartmouth having enough of an outdoorsy/rugged crowd to provide an alternative to old-money, stodgy preppiness that is also present at Dartmouth and especially Williams. I know a majority of Davidson students are not on financial aid, and that Davidson is not very culturally diverse (location is to blame perhaps?). I know there are also liberals at Davidson. I guess I'm wondering if the general campus tone is down-to-earth, middle-class? What % of students are from public schools, for example?

The stats suggest a wealthy student body with a very low percentage of low incomes, much like Washington and Lee. Financial aid is pretty good but the loan average is a little high. Not much economic diversity. Davidson has D1 sports like Colgate, but from what I've seen on TV mostly white athletes.
