Student Council/Government

This has been mentioned before, but I was surprised at the answers. For the most part, it seems like the average CCers high school has a so-so student council that is only semi-involved and most of the members are participating for college. Is your student council like this?

Mine is the complete opposite. At my school we have a class dedicated to Student Council and we receive credit because it falls under a leadership credit (we do have leadership lessons). Last year we had around forty members, but this year we cut back to around 27. Basically on the average day we meet in our sponsors room during the hour and have a meeting discussing the day's activities and what needs to be done/brought to attention. We then disperse and once the bell rings we eat lunch. After lunch, we come back and finish working on whatever.

We are really involved. Every dance is hosted by us and we put a lot of work into it. For instance, our homecoming is solely ran by us. We organize the spirit week, the parade, the assemble, and the dance. Every aspect is taken care of by us (not our sponsors). Everything from the gossamer decorations, DJ, and organization of the clubs for the assembly. On top of dances (homecoming and winter coronation) we do service projects each month. This coming month we will be supporting a girl in our council with Juvenile Diabetes. One of this year's main goals is to volunteer (school-wide campaign) at a local non-profit nutrition and wellness camp near our school.

I just wanted to know are there many councils out there like this? This is basically my school family, if we aren't already required to do something on the weekend we end up doing a STUCO bonding activity. My intent is to see what some other councils are like.

My student council plans dances, homecoming, winter week, bloodmobile, etc. but we do get a lot of help from our moderators/teachers. We meet every morning during homeroom, but for about half the year it just acts as regular homeroom because we rarely plan anything beyond our annual events. I think this is due to the fact that we have a ton of leadership groups at our school (Student Ministry, Link Crew, NHS, the list goes on…) so something is always going on. We have about 25 students every year, and they are just elected by popular vote after giving speeches - no campaigning involved.

P.S. We call ours Stud Co :)

My Council is rather like yours. We stay an extra 2-4 hours a day to keep every club in our school running, as well as plan all of the school events, dances and whatnot. I love my Council, they’re people I normally wouldn’t associate with that I completely adore. I didn’t join for college, I joined because I wanted to make sure my Senior year was amazing, although I’ve been an aide in the Council Office during school hours since freshman year.

Student Council is awesome. :)
