Student Health Services and Private Insurance

This is probably something that everyone knows about except me. But just in case I'm not the only one in the dark.... Son has AETNA POS insurance. We didn't purchase the school required insurance which is AETNA Chickering because I assumed they'd be a total overlap.

Since then, I've made a few calls. If son gets sick and we want full coverage, he is being advised to go to the Emory Clinic at 1525 Clifton Rd. It is the outpatient clinic for the hospital. They are very used to seeing Emory students and apparently many go there. He can certainly use the Emory Student Health Service but that will be billed as out of network. No problem for a simple office visit but if extensive tests are involved or multiple visits the bills could add up. Kids with AETNA Chickering are covered in-plan at the health service; I have no idea what their coverage at Emory Clinic would be.

I am assuming this advice about the clinic versus the health service may pertain to other students who are privately insured. How complicated things get with all these insurance questions!

You are correct. The Emory Clinic accepts the Aetna POS while the Emory Health Services only take the Aetna Chickering PLan.
They have an excellent group of internists at 1525 Clifton.
I wanted a private internist so I consulted with a recommended physician upon arrival to campus.

I plan to use the Emory U Health Service as a back up.

To add to the confusion both the EUHS and Emory Clinic are in the same building.
