Aetna Student Health Insurance

I'm with the Health Alliance HMO in Illinois, and I'm getting concerned about what to do about Health Insurance. I've called, and they said that the HMO covers emergency room visits (after the $225 deductible), but my daughter won't have a primary care doctor. I'm concerned about what this might mean if something like an appendicitis attack hits.

So I'm seriously considering getting a AENTA Student Health policy for her while she's at IU.

Opinions?

I called my HMO again, and asked about what happens for emergency room visits where she would need to get admitted for surgery, and they said that if she got admitted to the hospital then it would be the hospital admission charge of $325, but the rest is covered. So I’m relieved about that, and I’m think we’re ok with our coverage.

Still, any opinions about all this would be great. Do most people already have this under control, or haven’t thought of this at all? Any stories about what happened to you, would be appreciated. I’m just trying to make sure all bases are covered.

Doesnt the health center have primary care doctors?

Not in our network.

I dont think it matters. At orientation they said health center does not accept insurance you have to bill it yourself and each visit is only $25

We were told the same as Yankees. They won’t bill insurance but we can submit it on our own if we choose to.

Called our insurance and it counts as out of network if we use the IU health clinic so everything there comes out of our deductible. Their advice was to send her to the clinic and pay the $20 for convenience and send her to the in-network Bloomington Hospital for the big stuff because they will pay a higher percentage.

There are plenty of clinics and doctors in Bloomington–CVS also has the minute clinic that is great for those ‘primary care’ doctor type needs. I was there for 4 years and never had to visit the doctor, but plenty of students visited the health center, the minute clinic, or PromptCare when needed.

I know you’re concerned, but worrying about something huge (like an ER visit) that likely won’t happen isn’t that productive. I’d be more concerned about your regular health needs–vision, dental (wisdom teeth problems), primary care (sore throats, sinus infections), and mental health.
