Hey, so I don’t know about you guys but I’m getting super frustrated trying to find a part-time job for this semester. Like, do you guys feel like the application process is just long? I just want to get a job to sustain myself- not a career in retail, so why do we have to spend 45 minutes doing the online screening thingamajig?!?
Okay rant over-
What do you think? Do you guys feel/experience the same thing as me?
Does anyone have any advice on this??
Get used to the screening process. Just like with college applications, they are trying to look for “fit” and identify problem employees. I remember applying for a professional level management job at a small company, where the screening tool repeatedly asked me about appropriateness of doing or dealing drugs. SMH. I figured it must have been a problem with a prior employee.
Take the screenings tools seriously if you want to be considered for the job. Of course, apply for multiple jobs. Some companies accept applications even when they don’t have positions open.
Applications are part of the process. If you want a job, internship, grad school, whatever, you will need to jump through the application hoops. Sometimes these involve a lot of advanced planning, deadlines, recommendations, etc. Quite frankly, going through these application processes is good practice. Besides, you want your employer to be able to trust you, and you want to know that your coworkers have been screened and are trustworthy.
Here’s what my daughter did this semester:
She went to the school website and entered “work study” into the search bar, though “part time employment” would have done.
They gave her a list of departments that typically hire kids.
She sent an email and resume to a bunch, asking about work study.
She got 3 offers and starts working with Residence Life this morning.
As to the 45 minute online screening, it is what it is. You just want money, I get that. They want someone who will show up, who can do the job, who wants it badly enough to give up 45 minutes to get the job.
