Student Life

Slightly off-topic from the million chances posts, but I wanted get the inside scoop from someone who has already visited (or better yet - a current student).

I adore Lehigh, and I think it would be a good fit for me. But I've heard that the social scene is COMPLETELY dominated by parties. I like to party, but I also like variety. What else is there to do? Will you ever find people just hanging out and watching movies, or having a fun day outside?

Any input about the social situation would be much appreciated.

I'm not a student, but I can tell you from my son that there is more to do than party.

He goes skiing - Blue Mountain is not far away. Biking - over the bridge in Bethlehem. Hanging out with SAE club working on their racecar. Going to the mall...so, it's not just all about the party.

hey world changer, I just finished my freshman year, and it was definitely a great experience. while a lot of the social scene is comprised of partying and greek life, there are indeed other things to do on campus. I have a few friends on Ski Team; there are lots of resorts in the Poconos that are close by. I'm also really involved with student government, and there are literally tons of opportunities for students to get involved. I love this aspect because it not only fulfills a passion of mine; it also allows me to expand my social circle and connections, both in terms of students and faculty/administrators. if you have any other questions or want to know more, feel free to message me.

good luck!

I don't understand how a school's social scene can be COMPLETELY dominated by the greek system. You generally think of partying and drinking when you think of a greek system. Are you expecting Lehigh kids to be partying and drinking during all of their free time? While partying is in fact a big part of Lehigh, you have to realize that there will be tons of time where partying is not going to be an acceptable social activity. You aren't going to be drinking at 4pm on a Friday afternoon, are you? Trust me, you will find things to do around campus. "chillin out" and watching movies, playing video games, and such will definitely be a big part of your social life, regardless of how big the greek scene is. Bethlehem isn't a major city, but I'm sure you could find things to do there. We also have an under-utilized Zoellner Arts Center with many performances and such.

World Changer, what are your interests? I'm sure that some of the students would love to tell you specifically what's available to you. There's a gym for working out (although those hills might do the same job :) ). Like young adults everywhere, Lehigh students like to hang out with each other.

And ditto to cclu's comment about the "under-utilized Zoellner Arts Center." Students probably get great prices to see some wonderful performances. (I think it has three theatres as well as many music practice rooms and an art gallery.)

Thanks everyone. Your responses have definitely helped.

Like I said, I haven't been able to visit yet. I know that there's more to any school than just partying, but that's the only aspect that's really portrayed on review sites (such as campusdirt and theu), which makes it difficult to really picture everyday life.

What do students usually do on a Saturday afternoon? Or after a long day of classes? Is there a student hub that attracts the student body to hang out? How often do students venture out into the town?

Those are the kinds of things I haven't really been able to get a feel for.

Momwaiting: I'm not much of an athlete, but I'm currently the editor-in-chief of my school paper. So I'd definitely want to get involved with one of the campus publications. I'm also interested in perhaps joining a community service group. :)

"What do students usually do on a Saturday afternoon? Or after a long day of classes? Is there a student hub that attracts the student body to hang out? How often do students venture out into the town?"

Saturday's start slow. Usually it starts off with a late lunch with a bunch of people from your hallway. There are two food choices available during the weekends on campus - Pandini's (pizza) or Rathbone Dining Hall. After that, each to his own... people do homework in their rooms or in the lounges... others play videogames.. others get involved in volunteering around South Bethlehem.. some take the campus shuttle to the Lehigh Valley mall... or play intramural sports... In addition, during the fall football games are pretty well attended. Next year Lehigh-Laf is going to be at LEHIGH, which will be awesome. Riding a school bus over a mountain with your college friends can be a priceless experience to say the least. I'd say the normal Saturday afternoon is probably going to be studying and doing homework around your dorm, as well as socializing with friends.

I'd say students hang around their dorms a lot. As for a hub, there's an on-campus diner called the Hawk's Nest, home of incredibly greasy food. There's a lot of comedy shows and concerts at the Hawk's Nest throughout the year. Plus, it's open until really late so it's the place to go after a long night on the Hill. There's also Ulrich Student Center, which is where the mail boxes are... there are tons of sofas and a food store here, so you can chill out here in between classes and such.

As for going off-campus, it really depends on the individual. As a freshmen, you won't have a car. Plus, Lehigh is literally on a mountain, and the dorms are way above the town. This makes going into Bethlehem somewhat of a hassle. Plus I wouldn't exactly call either S. Bethlehem or N. Bethlehem a college town at all. If you really want to go shopping, you definitely need to take the campus shuttle to the Lehigh Valley mall. Also, right below campus are bus stops to NYC and Philly. I know a lot of students who utilize these buses (about 30$ round trip) on the weekends. Takes about 2 hours to NYC.

I'll take a stab at answering some of worldchanger's questions too, though I think that cclu did a pretty good job already.

"What do students usually do on a Saturday afternoon?"
For starters, most people wake up kinda late, though I have a few friends who woke up early and would lock themselves (figuratively speaking) in the library. a lot of people do work, many get brunch, which is a really common thing at colleges - esp. Lehigh. there is a bus that goes to the mall, and in the fall of course, there are the football games. you may know that the stadium is on Goodman Campus, and since you won't have a car, you'll need to take the shuttle bus. as cclu said, taking the bus is awesome...you will see things on that ride that you have never seen before in your life. other than studying and mall trips/football games, my friends and i watched movies, napped and hung out. we also played sports (basketball/football/soccer) etc. at the gym or at the court which was right across from our dorm.

"Or after a long day of classes?"
As I said, I did a lot with student government, so I had to attend a lot of meetings with peers/admininstrators. I also got involved with a cultural group of which I am a part on campus. My advice would be to get involved with at least one on-campus activity. Some examples (besides student gov.): ASA, which is the Association of Student Alumni. They are the group that gives tours and they do a lot of spirit-related things for the school. It's not easy to get into, but if you are interested, you should definitely apply when you get to campus. Another group is Leadership Lehigh. They do community service and leadership activities...it's a little easier to get "into" than ASA, but it is also a good experience from what I have heard. Other things that may take up your time after class are your fraternity/sorority if you are pledging, intramural or club sports (games and/or practices), and of course, homework, etc. If you are looking for a list of activities, you can find one on the Lehigh homepage under "Student Life."

Is there a student hub that attracts the student body to hang out?
Lehigh is what's known as a "Village System." There is not just one student hub that has everything (food, mailboxes, bank, etc). Rather, there are a group of buildings that make up the student hub. Again, to reiterate cclu, there is the Hawk's Nest...it is really close to all the freshman dorms and its the place to go late on weekends or during finals when you are up late studying and get hungry. there is also the University Center (aka "the UC"), which has some admin offices, one of the two major dining halls, and also a quick place to get food (called the "Upper UC" or just "Upper"). It is this place that has the bank, Pandini's, and the LGBTQA room, which is more or less a room and office for the gay/straight alliance. in Ulrich, you will find mailboxes, a post office, where you should go if you lose your ID, the office of student leadership development (OSLD), and the community service office. it is also homebase for lehigh's own radio station, WLVR. the downstairs of Ulrich is Taylor Gym, where the wrestling meets and volleyball games are held. the intramural/club sports office is there, as well.

How often do students venture out into the town?
because of the conditions that cclu mentioned, it is somewhat cumbersome to go into the town. South Bethlehem and North Bethlehem are separated by the "New Street Bridge." you will definitely figure out what that means in just a few months. the South area is where Lehigh is, and there are some really cute "moms and pops" stores on 3rd and 4th streets, which I would definitely encourage you to explore. a lot of them are boutiques, and even if you aren't buying anything, get some hallmates together and explore a little bit -- Bethlehem is where you are going to be spending the next 4yrs of your life. North Bethlehem is a little bit "nicer." That is where Moravian College is located. They have a really nice bookstore, which is on Broad Street, and there are some nice restaurants and little shops located there, as well. There are also trips to NYC and Philly which are not too expensive, though they are not every weekend. If you want to go somewhere when there is not a bus going which is sponsored by a campus organization, there is a bus stop just a few blocks from campus which is very convenient.

sigh! I know I just wrote a lot, and I hope you guys aren't too overwhelmed. Lehigh wasn't my 1st choice either -- I was deciding between Columbia and Lehigh, but after a year, I know I made the right decision.

Thanks for writing all of that (to both of you). I was little unsure at first, but now I think I'd really love the school.

The thing is though, its really difficult to make a generalization about college life. What do you like doing with your own time on a Saturday afternoon? You'll probably be doing something similar at Lehigh as well. Good luck, hope to see you in the fall!
