Current students, what is the University of Notre Dame really like? Can you describe things that don't normally get told? What are the dorms like? What are the best and worst parts of going to Notre Dame? What makes Notre Dame different from other colleges, aside from the religious affiliation, academics, and sports? What are some things to consider that most people wouldn't think about? What are the classes like?

I am a current freshmen at Notre Dame, and would be happy to answer your questions. The dorms are amazing, and unique to Notre Dame. Each dorm functions like a family, everybody is very close and there is a lot of dorm pride. Many students live in their dorm all four years because of how much they like it in the dorm. The best part of going to Notre Dame? Being here. It’s not an ideal answer, but as Lou Holtz once said: “If you have ever been to Notre Dame, no explanation is necessary. If you have not been, no explanation will suffice.” There is a palpable magic here, and the spirit of Notre Dame is an integral part of a campus life. Thus far, I have not really found any part of Notre Dame to be bad. Nothing has stopped me and made me think that coming here was a bad decision. In fact, I know it to be the best decision I have ever made. What makes Notre Dame different? The unity. We are one campus, one student body. Meeting alumni is amazing because simply for the reason that you attended the same school, you have an instant, deep connection. There is a lot of “we’re in this together” vibe on campus, versus the cutthroat competition of other places. Notre Dame people will bend over backwards to help each other. One of my friends’ grandpa was very sick. My other friend offered his own car for my friend to drive 11 hours home to see his grandpa. One thing people don’t consider are the opportunities on campus. Interhall sports (sports teams for the dorms, competing against each other) are an amazing and fun opportunity. If you can dream it, you can do it here at ND. As for classes, it depends on the major, but generally they are smaller, with the professor getting to know you not just as a student, but as a person as well. For the bigger classes, there are a lot of resources to make sure that each and every student can succeed. I hope this answers your questions! Feel free to ask me more if you feel the need to.
