Student rejected= parent making angry phone calls to the university

I STILL don’t understand how race should play ANY role in admissions. AT ALL. I know this is a radical idea, but how about each college accepts the most qualified applicants?

They already do. But many of them just have a wider definition of “qualified” than merely grades and test scores.

Yep it includes the amount of melanin in the applicant’s skin

I think he might mean that they are discriminating against Asians, but I’m not so sure. Since you were deferred I would tell your Mom not to do that. You still have a good chance.

Oh, dear. Have your sister call and explain the situation, that’s terrible. They can’t reverse her admissions decision, but at least it will give your sister a little bit of integrity back to her name.

There is a reason admissions looks at test scores, grades, etc. There is also a reason that admissions have minimum standards with regards to scores, grades, etc. If an applicant does not meet the minimum standards, how in the world are they going to be successful at a particular college? Gaining admission is one thing, maintaining a GPA once there and graduating is another. Does the thought of being successful in college even enter the picture here? Think about it!

this has GOT to be a joke

This guy makes the most brilliant threads.

Seriously though, your sister got rejected for having poor stats, get over it.
That’s life.

I’m glad your sister has the maturity to accept it, while your mother doesn’t.
By the way, your argument against the UC eligibility is really hilarious.

wow…that is insane

“I STILL don’t understand how race should play ANY role in admissions. AT ALL. I know this is a radical idea, but how about each college accepts the most qualified applicants?”

If they had that methodology 75 years ago, they probably wouldn’t have to account for minority status now. But as it is, racial discrimination of the past has disadvantaged groups to the point where colleges realize they have to compensate.

None of this is to say that an intelligent Latino, Black, Asian or American Indian can’t get into college by their own merit.

well…i saw a study released by the US census that at the rate Hispanics are growing in the US, in 50 years, the Hispanic population will be greater than the “white” population…so does that mean in 50 years whites can be considered minorities and get academic advantages?

@I495
Compensate for what?
Asians were treated like complete garbage 75 years ago, so where’s their compensation?

Sorry, but those days are over and I don’t see how it has disadvantaged the groups.
People should just learn to work hard and get past their obstacles. Colleges should definitely select upon qualifications, having race as a factor is, in my opinion, complete bull.

wow, they probably only asked for her name in case they ever needed to file a restraining order against her…that’s ridiculous

I wonder how many minorities go to private high schools. I wonder if that’s some kind of disadvantage not to be able to go to a good school.

“Asians were treated like complete garbage 75 years ago, so where’s their compensation?”

Internment Camps lasted for half a decade. Slavery lasted for two hundred years, and segregation continued for a century after that.

Think about it this way. When my parents were born, segregation was still prevalent across the south. We’re only a generation past the crippling social and political policies that prevented much of this country from securing a good education and living their Constitutional rights. It will take more than a few decades for us to get past the scars of that era.

^ Are you legitimately implying that their is some sort of “debt” that whites have to repay to young blacks who have never experienced segregation?..

“well…i saw a study released by the US census that at the rate Hispanics are growing in the US, in 50 years, the Hispanic population will be greater than the “white” population…so does that mean in 50 years whites can be considered minorities and get academic advantages?”

Colleges look at minority status in terms of how many Asians, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Caucasians, etc. apply to college. If it turns out that more Latinos will be applying to college than whites in fifty years, then yes, whites would have some sort of minority status.

For example: as a male, I’m an underrepresented minority at many of the colleges to which I’m applying. :-)
