My D is interested in both St. Lawrence and Rochester, but I am concerned about the distance/best mode of transportation back and forth to the Boston area. I would be interested to hear from any students/parents to see if St. Lawrence is a school she should continue to consider. As of now, it seems great, but I'm really worried about whether travel would be a deal breaker!

I went there about 20 years ago–hopefully you’ll get a current student to answer. But, unless things have changed substantially, the best mode of getting from Canton to anywhere is a car. I had an 8 hour trip from my home in NJ to SLU, and I am pretty sure that my parents dropped me and my stuff off at the beginning of each year, and for all breaks I used the ride board and hopped in a car with someone local to my home area, usually paying for gas. (I bet the ride board is online now, but I’m sure it still exists!) I think I left my stuff in storage in Canton or at a local friends home over the summers, and rode home with friends at the end of the year as well. My stepfather was an alumni, but even so, my parents were not keen on making that drive if they didn’t have to! That said, one of my roommates was from Oregon, and she would fly into Syracuse and get a ride or catch a bus from there. And unless the demographic has changed, there will be a large percentage of students from Massachusetts to ask for rides home.

I am a current student from CT and transportation home is SO easy. The school offers transportation to bus stops, airports and train stations for $25 (distance doesn’t matter, will always be $25). There are also a lot of MA students here that have cars that would be able to drive her to Boston or right near it. Lastly, freshman are allowed to have cars on campus which is always an option.

My D is a freshman at St Lawrence and she has had no trouble getting rides home to the Boston area. There are many students from Eastern Mass. at SLU and a lot of them bring their cars up to school. I’ve also found that parents are very willing to carpool during breaks. There’s also a bus that goes from Canton to Boston.

D is SLU Freshman. Vacation Bus service is fantastic. Every break just sign up and you’ll be on your way home. Only $60 round trip to Albany NY area. Bus goes Canton, Albany, Springfield, Boston and then back when vacation is over. Many students have cars. Lots of kids from Boston area attend. Our D even flew home Cape Air for $60 each way (small plane).

Thanks for all of the info. BeeHappy713 - what airport did she fly out of? How far was it from campus? We are planning to visit, but I just picture it to be incredibly remote. However, there seems to be much to like about the school so I’m trying to keep an open mind.
