Hello, I'm an international student and I want to study in Harvard College. I've planned to meet all the admission requirements (SAT,SAT SUBJECT, ACT, etc) the next year but the only thing that confuses me is the visa. I've heard people waiting for years to get their visas. I'll be finished with my school after about a year and a half and thus will be ready to apply to the Harvard college for undergrad degree in Electrical Engineering. It means that I have at least two years to prepare myself to get into Harvard which I think is enough time. In these two years, I'll be improving my English, History, and all the other requirements such as ACT, SAT SUBJECT tests etc. Hopefully, my family will deal with the financial requirements and I'd go for an F-1 visa. If my Family didn't afford, I'd go for the J-1 visa which I think is used to work along with study. I don't know much about visa and it's process. Kindly tell me what's the option available for me If I want to do the job along with my studies ? Also what if I want to study without work ? Please explain me the F-1 and J-1 visas and also tell me their procedures. How much time will it take to get my F-1/J-1 visa ? I'm asking because if it's gonna take like 2 years, I should start planning it right away.

You can’t apply for a US student visa without official proof from Harvard or another US school that you have been admitted and are attending. But the wait for student visas is not like the wait for other types of visas, so international students generally do not have a problem attending school in the US in the fall after being admitted in April.

Thanks molliebatmit, the information that you provided was extremely helpful. So basically, I’ll first have to be accepted by the Harvard and then they will give me some sort of visa documents and I’ll not have any problems attending the college in the US.
