I could see that this won’t be very cut and dry. Now if I can get her motivated to actually get started on the college thing. We are a bit behind. I wish we could visit all of them. Unfortunately, there is no time (or money) for that. Speaking of money, we need schools that will offer pretty decent aid too. Are there any colleges that fit this criteria and tend to be generous with aid for those “lopsided students?”
Barnard meets full need for all students. BU leverages its aid-- so your D’s GPA might keep her out of the running for a full-need award. I don’t know if her ACT score would qualify her for merit aid anywhere.
I believe Macalester is also a full need school - but not absolutely sure on that.
American U. definitely does not meet full need for all students, and merit aid plays a large part there.
I don’t know about the other schools listed in your OP - I’m kind of limited to knowing about schools where my kids either applied or looked into.
She took the ACT in her sophomore year and she is retaking it this year so hopefully she can go up a few points. Of course, it would help if she studied but she didn’t do that the first time around either!!!
Mac meets need, but is not need blind in admissions. So if she had a lot of need, her chances of admission are reduced. Run the net price calculators on every school website.
Add to your list:
USC, U Arizona, Ohio State, U Indiana-Bloomington, George Washington U, and Rutgers.
McGill (Montreal) and U Victoria (Vancouver Island, Can) both have active Slavic programs and can represent an affordable option - even as an international - because of the favorable USD vs. CAD exchange rate.
@hop Thank you for the recommendations! We had looked at McGill a while back. Might have to revisit.
Well, she chose to take the ACT again in October. It’s really her math and science that she has to study for. She wanted a few weeks of school under her belt to get back into testing mode. Of course now she is also looking into the YES program in Bosnia for a gap year. Doesn’t look like we will be able to visit any schools but she did find out her AP English Lit teacher also has her master’s from UNC-CH in Slavic Studies. I told her if she does really well and gets to know her teacher well, that would be a great recommendation letter.
