Student's appearance???

Just wondering if anyone could comment about the way Wellesley students dress. Is it a casual atmosphere or do students dress up for class? Lots of makeup?

There’s a wide variety–depends on the person. I wear no makeup, ever, and I don’t feel at all self-conscious (I mean, I’m not sensitive about it since I never wear makeup, but I’d definitely say that many other students wear little or no makeup to class). I typically wear jeans and a nicer quality t-shirt or if I’m in a more dressy mood (or out of other clothes!), a cardigan and camisole/tank-top/whatever you want to call it. I personally favor sandals or cheap ballet flats as shoes, not because I’m too posh for sneakers but just because I hate wearing socks. I would put myself as a middle of the road everyday dresser for Wellesley. You definitely see people who obviously just rolled out of bed and pulled on their sweatpants, and that’s fine, and you also see people who really dress nicely all the time (although honestly, many many fewer of these people than of your very casually dressed people).

Someone commented once here on CC that all the Wellesley students they saw were wearing nicer flats of some sort instead of sneakers, and after that I looked around and had to agree that many students did wear fancier shoes. But I can’t imagine you would feel left out if you didn’t; plenty of people wear stylish sneakers or even just functional running shoe-type sneakers, and really, no one cares. I would say that Wellesley is the land of the scarf-as-accessory. I came here with none and have acquired–ack!–7 of various styles and usefulness. Many cardigans, at least among my friends, too. But honestly–I don’t think I’ve ever cared what someone had on in class. I know that there are places where the students say you feel left out if you don’t put yourself together for class; I really don’t think Wellesley is one of them. Come as you are, is my advice.

I definitely feel the same way. I’m generally pretty casual, jeans and a top of some kind, and I never wear makeup. I’ve had the days where I roll out of bed and go in sweatpants and a sweatshirt to class, and other days where I dress up a bit (definitely out of laundry on those days though…) – same as advantagious! You’ll find people with all ranges of fashion or lack thereof at Wellesley. I feel on campus it’s pretty laid back; if you go off campus, people tend to put a bit more effort into what they wear.

Freshman year I would sometimes roll out of bed and go to my early classes, but this year I’ve been putting a lot more effort into my appearance. I figure if I feel put together then I’ll feel put together for everything else? Wishful thinking, haha. Like a lot of girls here, when it’s warm I’ll bring out the cute bright dresses, but during the cold times people obviously wear the warm coats (I’m a big fan of dresses, so I wear sweater dresses with leggings).

Attire varies, but generally no one cares. Off campus people are probably going to an event, so they’ll look very nice. It’s so much fun to see everyone dolled up Friday night.

Good shoes are a must, not because people will scowl but because students in Boston do a lot of walking. Nice riding/fur-ish boots for the winter, flats/flip flops for warm weather. Fun, bright rain boots are good for the very rainy days.

If you are actually asking this question nine months before coming to Wellesley, then you are on the dressier end of the spectrum.

Otherwise: Sneakers, Wellesley hoodie, jeans, ponytail worked find for me and my roommate.

i really reccommend buying RAIN BOOTS. i was at wellesley on a really rainy day last year, and the rain ruined my ugg boots. puddles are everywhere and it rains hard. really hard.

Well, I would consider myself one of the more dressy women here… I typically plan out my outfit the night before; I’m not really sure why I put so much effort into the outfits, especially since sometimes all I do is go to class and come back. But I do! I have definitely seen the full spectrum of students, and to second Junie, buy both rainboots and snowboots. Definitely a big yes!

^^Well I would like to think that we dress up for ourselves, because it makes us feel confident. There will be days where I feel disorganized, I have tons of work to do, but knowing that I look put together gives me that extra boost to attack the day. I do like putting on the nice outfit every once in a while to impress the boyfriend, but mainly it’s for my own selfish reasons.
