Students- What are you doing this summer?

My S (finishing freshman year) is still trying to finalize plans for this summer. (He is going to have a late start because he will be meeting up and traveling with sis as she finishes up a semester abroad.) I think it's nice to balance fun, relaxation, work experience, resume building, AND making money.

What are some of the activities, classes, jobs, etc., that you have found this summer and how did you find them?

I always suggest to write a resume and contact everyone you know for networking of any job possibilities. Also, did your son look at the Career placement center or similar resource at USC for job listings?

I will be working on campus two days a week. The rest of my summer is still to be determined. I'm working for the office of Fire Safety and Emergency Planning, as I hope to go into that field after graduating. I was trying to find some volunteer jobs or internships in the field for the other three days, but that hasn't resulted in anything yet. Instead, I will probably be taking an EMT 1 class at Pasadena City College. Also, going on a cruise and having a friend visit for about a week! Then early move in for RA training (two weeks in advanced!)

I got a research fellowship so Ill be doing full-time research on campus.

It is a little too late to start the summer "job" (job, internship, fellowship) search as most positions are filled or have application deadlines that have passed.

But dont worry... the summer after freshman year isnt that important. Just getting a regular job at home (or in LA) is perfectly ok. As long as you fill your summers with some sort of productivity, future employers will be happy. Depending on your S's major, he can start searching for internships next year. Tell him to go to the career center and the career fair...great places to start.

If you work on campus, where do you stay in the summer? Can you stay at a USC dorm without taking summer school?

Good question Columbia Student.

yes..you can stay in a USC dorm (or I think they are apartments most likely) and not take summer classes. My roommate now is moving in to her room in Troy for the summer on Monday and she just has internships in LA to get too...

I am the same way as CubsRule...doing research with a grant all summer so I will be staying with uschousing as well

the summer housing is for any USC student whether or not you're taking classes, and unless you have a large group who's splitting rent on a house or apartment, it's the way to go, because some usc housing is cheaper for summer than anything you find from outside sources for the amount of personal space you can get.

my summer is working basic customer service job mon-wed, doing some internship seminars with a Hollywood producer, crewing on some indie short films, and going to lots of free movie screenings at Norris.

depending on what you're looking for, it's not necessarily too late to start interning. smaller companies often aren't working on a college schedule when they decide to bring on more help in the office, and plus, schools like UCLA are still in session so there will still be internships where "summer" doesn't start til June anyway.

I'm working at KAIST (its like a korean version of MIT) this July and will be teaching Korean to students there. Doesn't pay much but its better than having no job. I'm excited.

broadway theatre project for the second year. so excited because this may be my last BTP for a while since i'm transferring in this year (i was at a CCC before) and i'm going to get prepared for the MT minor. :)
