My university doesn’t offer classes in Finnish as a second language, but it does offer to waive the foreign language requirement via BYU’s FLAT tests. Not only would this be a huge help for me financially, but I’ve already been studying Finnish on my own for a bit now, and I love it and want to challenge myself more.
BYU, of course, doesn’t really tell you what to study, only that it tests on levels 100 and 200. The information taught can vary widely from language to language, so my question to those of you who have taken Finnish: What sorts of things did you cover in each level? You don’t have be overly detailed, just basic grammatical/vocabulary concepts so I can draft a lesson and study plan for the coming months.
I don’t plan on taking the test relatively soon, since I need ample time to prepare. If it helps, a little of what I’ve done so far: the textbook I use is “Suomen Mestari”, I’m almost through the first volume. To a lesser extent I’ve used “Suomea Suomeksi”, but the language felt a bit older and formal, so mostly as just a supplement. I’m working on trying to translate one of my childhood picture books to get more verb practice and new vocabulary.
Paljon kiitoksia!
