As happens often in India, I was in one school in Freshman and Sophomore year (9th and 10th) and in another school Junior and Senior year (11th and 12th). What I want to know is, how does this affect my admissions documents/formalities?

I have to get transcripts from BOTH schools, right? Do both of them have to fill the International School Supplement form? If just one school has to, then which one? Or will either do?

I entered my class incharge from the 2nd school as my counselor in the Common App (after consulting her). Is that okay? Does each college have to receive TWO packages of high school transcripts and documents - one from each school? (That'll screw me up SO bad in postal expenses).

Can anyone else who's also gone through this help me out?

If you have a school Counsellor just make copies of Class IX and X marksheet and hand these to her and the school will do the rest. Make sure you make copy of the page that explains the grading, it is usually the back page of the mark sheet. Just makes the counsellor and adcoms job easier to read the transcript based on grading structure followed by a particular curriculum.

Only the school you are passing out from has to complete the formalities. Please make sure that all the forms are simple as Colleges are handling massive amounts of data. Keep it simple, precise and relevant.

I am in the same situation as you ( well almost ). But here’s what you should do :

Get transcripts from BOTH schools.*

Your guidance counselor should be from your CURRENT school.

Your recommendations MUST (with some exceptions) be from teachers at your CURRENT school.

You SHOULD fill an ‘education interruption’ in the common app and any other applications you might be using.

As Anialways said, only your current school bears the responsibility of completing the various formalities. Your current counselor should probably contact the counselor at the previous school. Preferably by phone because email is quite an inefficient way of contact for teachers of that generation in India -__- No offence :P

I do not think the current counselor needs to get in touch with previous school’s counselor. All that is required is the original mark sheet for IX AND X. Also remember your current school admitted you on the basis of those documents.

That is the procedure we followed for my daughter as she too had changed schools and curriculum as well.

Also agree with you regarding recommendations, definitely current subject teachers as they would be the best people to highlight your strengths relevant to the program that you are applying for in college. Also please request your teachers to write the recommendations now as the application deadline approaches they will be handling a huge volume. Also helps if one is planning to apply ED.

One more tip if you have made up your mind on your top choice you can apply ED (if finances are not an issue), this will also help to wrap up application for all other colleges faster as all supporting documents will be ready ie. teacher recommendations, counselor recommendations, transcript etc.

Ah yes. It was a bit different in my case, w.r.t the counselor reference. But anyhow, you are correct in saying that the OP must have access to his/her original grade IX and X mark sheet/transcript.

Only my current school has to fill all the formalities.

My counselor has to be from the current school. (Done.)

My recommendations better be from the teachers in the current school. (Is this a hard and fast rule, though? One teacher at the first school, who taught me in Freshman and Sophomore year, knows me very well and could write a great LoR.)

I have to give my current school a photocopy of my 9th and 10th marksheets. Will do that. But what if they say something like, “You didn’t study here during that time period. We can’t fill out a transcript for these years”? What then?

Now, since I do have your attention, could you guys help me out with one more thing…namely, the transcripts. What do I have to do in them? If I just ask the high school for a transcript, will they know what to do? (Sorry if it seems like I’m being naive, but it’s not possible to underestimate my school’s skill in such matters.) Do I only have to give my report cards/marksheets or do I have to give something else? Should the transcript include mentions of prizes I’ve won in extra-curricular competitions while I was there?

More than anything else, could you people just link/show me how a transcript is supposed to look like?

Any other advice you can dish out? I’m dealing with archaic schools who aren’t adept in these procedures…so I have to do all the legwork myself. :(
