Studies indicate having college roommate of a different race reduces prejudice

^ and what is the relationship between the student’s grade, his skin color and the to[ic of this thread?

“black freshmen who came to college with high standardized test scores earned better grades”

Other research has indicated that high standardized test scores over predict grades for black students. Consequently, it made sense to research whether race of their roommates impacted the grades of black college students with high standardized test scores.

wait, I think that I am getting lost with your post people:

So how could the college roommate of a black student have an impact on his SAT score when the black student meet his roommate after the whole SAT thing was over? Don’t you generally take the SAT before you go to college? How would it make sense to make a research to find out if the college roommates of black college students have an impact on the black students’ high standardized test?

If the black student takes his standardized test before he goes to college, how can his roommate be a factor in his test result?

Is it me who is getting the post above me in the wrong way or is someone trying to justify why they posted this futile link about a so called research that supposedly find out and indicate to us something that was already pretty obvious to anyone with a brain ?

Please tell me because I still don’t get the relationship between a student’s grade, his skin color and the so-called information that this study indicate

we’re all some shade of brown, b.

Yelena, I think it says that black students have a higher GPA if they have a white roommate, controlling for SATs.

^ It’s saying that their grades in college were better, not their SAT scores…

“Is it me who is getting the post above me in the wrong way or is someone trying to justify why they posted this futile link about a so called research that supposedly find out and indicate to us something that was already pretty obvious to anyone with a brain ?”

I’d like to suggest a third option. It might be “sort of” futile because it was posted on college life.

But just “sort of”.

FWIW, my African American daughter found her perfect match in her White roommate, freshman year.Remember last years Targe commercial? A little TOO perfect, maybe. They did not seem to stretch each other much at all. Next year she has an African American roommate. They met early as non-drinkers, but I’m not sure how much else they have in common. this formate seems to have better study habits. I’m hoping D’s GPA will improve!

I honestly don’t care what my roommate is rather than WHO he is. If he came to college to only party and is a complete dumbass regarding making life decisions, he can ■■■■. My roommate is also a science major so I expect we’ll get along. The only thing that may happen between us is him looking at me weird if I’m cleaning and lubing my paintball marker…

**^ thanks al and colleebound for making this GPA/STA thing clear.

Did they put George Bush with a green roommate? Is it why he apparently did not do well in college?

If I get a redneck for roommate, will that help me get higher grades?

Stupid study. The lamest students in my high school were the white American kids. They were lazy and gross. They never made an effort and there was nothing about their attitude toward school or toward life in general that could inspire greatness or academic excellence. They did not care about their lives because they knew that once they become the reject of society, their country’ well fare program would give them a hand and an unemployment check.

I would have get my diploma from jail if having a white kid as a roommate could make me have better grades. This of course does not apply to all white kids so unlike this stupid study I am not going to generalize.

In my HS, the greatest students were us Eastern European, the Asian students were looking for challenge too, then we had the African students who were bright as well as the Easter European and very inspirational.

African Americans are not at a disadvantage academically because of the color of their skin but because of their society and the way they grew up. Look at it that way: Almost everyone is surprised when some African American student get good grades because no one expect them to do anything good but drugs and gangster rap. It is such a surprise that if one of them gets into a good college, some CC members who get rejected scream “AFFIRMATIVE ACTION”. It is even such a greater shock for some of you that you try to justify their excellent performance in college to his WHITE roommate. Is it possible that an African American student could be smart but decide to act like the little gangster of the ghetto because no one except something good from him and when he does something good, no one attribute it to his own merit but rather to the pity that society has for him aka AFFIRMATIVE ACTION or the holly influence of the WHITE kid next door.

What a sick society?

What a sick society?

It is stupid to say that BLACK people this, BLACK people that. Because a lot of the black kids are not African AMERICAN or Black American. A lot of them are from African countries or the ones who were born here have 1st, 2nd, generation of African Immigrants as parents.

It is possible that their home is still dominated by the dominant African culture which encourage every child to always strive for academic excellence .From my personal understanding, when some of these kids get into a good college, they don’t get the acceptance because society pity them through Affirmative Action, they don’t get high grades because their white roommates groomed them. They beat the system because their African /immigrant parents know the importance of education. They know that back home in Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia or Ethiopia, there is no such thing as Well fare. So they teach their kids at an early age to strive for excellence because if they fail, there will be no Uncle Sam to take care of them. They know that they are the children of immigrants so they know that their parents can get kicked out of this country at any time if a mistake was ever to happen. So they study hard to succeed whether their parents were a janitor or a phd holder.

This society is a very shallow one because African American can’t get merit for their hard work. It is even sadder that they think that all black people are doomed to fail in life like the African American; hence they put them in the same box.

It must be very sad to be black in America because no matter what you do, as long as it is not gangsta rap, drug dealing , you effort will need an explanation. And the answer will be either because the system had pity of your skin color or because your white friend was a good role model.

The next study will find that most of white kids ( especially these Hollywood people) who died of overdose were close friend or shared a room or an apartment with a Black student.

чёрт! проклятье! what a country!! , God Bless America**

TO follow with my last post:

Even this country’s VP was shocked when he heard that the black man who was running for election was articulate. Damn, how com didn’t the monkey speak like Tupac or Jayzee ( no pun intended at Black people. See the sarcasm)? Thanks to his college roommate who even helped him make his way through Yale. Oh no, that must have been caused by the influence of his white mother.

Even the racist college roommate of his wife helped her get into Yale .

I wonder if you would continue to use this awful language, despite having it carefully explained to you by more that one poster that the M word is equivalent in offensiveness to the N word, if your real name was posted next to your inappropriate remarks? Amazing how brave people can be when they get to hide behind anonymity.

Real courage would of course be to throw caution to the wind, give your real name when you post such things, and not worry about future admissions officers, employers, customers, private clubs, and the like. Instead of creating a permanent internet record for eternity which will hurt people’s feelings and fuel discrimination, you could instead create damage for yourself which would follow you forever.

Just an idea.

Even better, of course, would be to take a more mature path and “stuff” the pejorative remarks.

Plainsman, I really like how you actually wrote down the slurs for Hispanics, Jews and, Asians yet you abreviated the slurs for African Americans and Little People, it doesn’t make sense! I’m sorry but if your gonna list them then you might as well list them all otherwise you look like a biased ******! This is coming from a " Sand N-word" as you would put it!

Please stuff the midget lecture.

If being called a midget and having little Jimmy point and stare at them is the worse thing they ever face…then it’s probably not comparable.

When you find me a fat black Arab gay Jewish midget, then maybe I’ll feel sympathy for his plight.

Until then:

This.

I am a black college student in the South and I had high SAT/ACT scores, but I am not performing nearly as well as I could, mainly because I don’t like my major, but that’s another story.

Anyway, I had 3 other roommates my freshman and sophomore years. There was another black che engineering major, a white bio major from TN, and a white philosophy major from California. I really enjoyed the diversity we had. Even the other black guy and I were very different (GASP!). The bio major was in a frat so we never saw him too much. He moved out sophomore year, while the rest of us remained roommates. We often had great conversation ranging from football to politics to religion to the new hot chicks moving in next door. We all hung out. We would go see indie bands together and then go to a hip hop club together.

I can definitely understand how having white roommates would make a black student want to earn better grades even more. I know I often try my hardest in the classes I enjoy to engage in the discussions and show my white classmates that there are such things as educated black men, and in fact, even the stereotypical rapper can be an intelligent individual. I was fortunate to have a roommate from California, who was more “socially & culturally” advanced than the South so he didn’t have any of those misconceptions and/or prejudices against black people.

Lastly, it has been my experience that there are some white students who have never interacted with black peers and probably never will unless they are at work. They just keep to their inner circles or self-perceived elitist organizations. Then you have those who have never interacted with black peers but are willing or eager to. They may ask “ignorant” questions but they are not racist. Then you have those like my roommate who obviously come from a region that is not as backwards as the South. They are friends with everybody. Finally you have those racist - whether blatant or hidden.
The same applies to black students as well - minus the ignorant questions.

Since you brought up sympathy…

I have lived a long time, and in all these years I have never met a person who is bigoted or racist and wasn’t also seriously deficient in a significant and painful way. That is why instead of getting angry, I always just feel pity. I also always wonder why anyone would get angry at people who are invariably pathetic and sad behind their pejorative bravado. Usually it is intellectual and/or social deficiency, and quite often underachievement in acquiring wealth over the long term.

Having met and worked for decades with extremely successful people in a number of different fields, I have seen abundant evidence that even from a young age, the highest achievers are disproportionately compassionate and mature.

Character is who you are when no one is watching.

I was actually offended when you said the words “midget” and ■■■■■■■■ were equivalent. One is a term used to degrade an entire race forced into slavery, and one is a mildly offensive term used for short people. Do you think Napoleon would have conquered Europe if he were 6 inches taller and black?

^ Very good question.

Napoleon could have maybe do it because Hitler was able to exterminate the jews even though he had dark eyes, dark hair, he was short and there was nothing Aryan about him.

If a non Aryan was able to convince the Aryan of the inferiority of the rest of the world but still managed to control the minds of the pure race , why wouldn’t a a tall black hunkie convince the white people that Black is inferior but still manage to control the minds of the white people and convince them to kill and enslave everything that was black?

Anyone can be evil . You just have to know how to play with people’s mind.
