Studio art at Bard?

My daughter is interested in studio art and she is looking at all of the usual art schools, but her college counselor suggested she also look at Bard. Does anyone out there have any experience with this? Her stats are not up to what Bard advertises it’s looking for. I’m not sure if even considering it is a waste of time.

Any Bard art students out there?

Studio art here is highly regarded. I have not had personal experience, however, my brother and many of my friends are studio art majors here.

As with all academic departments, with professors, you win some and you lose some. My brother decided to become a studio art major after taking a sculpture class with a professor he really enjoyed having. I have friends who have poor views of some studio art professors.

Art at Bard (any medium from film to writing to studio to photography to music, etc.) is intense. Many departments require/request portfolios in order to get accepted into the class.

In order to moderate (which is how we get into majors here), the studio art requirements aren’t very tasking, which also makes it easy to take courses in things outside of one’s major and to fulfill distribution requirements.

Don’t be afraid of Bard’s stats. It is testing optional which means that one does NOT have to send AP scores, SAT scores or ACT scores unless one chooses to. (Don’t think that you are reprimanded for not sending them. It truly is testing optional). Talent is an important factor here if you’re looking for something specific. I have friends and acquaintances here who had pretty low GPAs and got in because of their passion and talent for what they wanted to do.

Bard is also one of those schools that is very self-selecting; do not apply to Bard if you do not like reading and writing. It is definitely quirky both socially and administratively. I love it here and I think that your daughter should at the very least check it out.

I hope I helped some!
