Wise parents,
My 11th grader plans to study abroad for 12th grade. She also hopes to enter university as a freshman the following year (2022-23). She is a solid student and lacks only 4 specific credits to meet graduation requirements in our state. She will likely earn some or all of those credits while studying abroad. She won’t be able to graduate from high school in her host city.
Do any of you have advice on high school graduation options for a student under these circumstances? Should she consider, for example, a GED or graduating from a virtual high school? She’s a good student (4.0 unweighted GPA, 1500 SAT), if that factors in. Note that we’re in a very large school district in the South with lots of disadvantaged students. The administrators are focused on those kids and don’t encourage study abroad or seem able to help us figure this out.
Thanks!
Is your focus on how to get a HS diploma, and your school system won’t offer it unless she is in person for grade 12? and you can’t enroll her in another school system?
What is the process for home schoolers in your region?
Thanks for your reply! Yes, our focus is on how to get a HS diploma. It isn’t clear that the school system will help us in a way that will allow for Fall 2022 enrollment in university. The study abroad program starts in August and continues until late June, which complicates things.
I have reached out the a couple of accredited online high schools and we will also reach out to the admissions office at her top choice university to see if a GED would hurt her selection chances given these circumstances. That actually might be all that we can do, although I am curious to hear any other ideas and what other students have done in these circumstances.
Check out your local home school groups- they will know what the options are locally (if you are in PA, you can do it directly with the state). It should not be hard to organize a HS diploma between now and June. If your daughter has taken an academically rigorous course load a GED will undersell what she has actually accomplished
Go for a HS diploma rather than a GED. Virtual school, homeschool diploma all work.
