I've just started my search for study abroad programs for next year (preferably I'd like to go to two different counties for the whole year, one for each semester) and I'm wondering if anyone had any information/experience with creating their own trip.

At my university, we're allowed to independently come up with a study abroad trip (ie. apply to the university in the host country, get your own housing, schedule classes, etc.) as long as the classes match up with your degree. Financial aid is even considered, despite not going through a program. It makes it a little tougher when looking at countries in which I don't have a lot of language experience (especially trying to look at housing) but I know people who have figured it out all the same.

For me, money is definitely a huge factor and it seems like going independently might save me the most money. Maybe I'm wrong?

Anyway, I was just wondering if there was anyone that might share their experience with independently working on a study abroad trip, maybe the pros and cons? How did you search for universities in the first place? Like I said, I'm very much at the beginning of searching for answers and I'd appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks!!
