Hello,

I really need some suggestions/experiences/rumors on a study abroad/internship placement group in Spain called Adelante.

I really would like to do an unpaid internship in Accounting in Madrid. My university offers a program to do this. However, it's unbelievably overpriced. Part of the reason it's so expensive is that you get academic credit for the internship, but I don't need the academic credit and they won't let me opt out of it!

So I looked for alternatives and found Adelante. The program looks perfect. It's about a third of the price of my university. You do/pay for the internship by the month (which is perfect for me because I go to a school on the pesky quarters system). The cost includes housing, support, and a two week intensive Spanish class (which I don't really think I need buy the more practice the better).

Has anyone heard of them/worked through them? Is it a reputable program? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks you!

Has anyone worked through Adelante in Spain?

Hey there,

I just got back from a nightmare experience in Spain through the study abroad company Adelante Abroad. I am trying to spread the word to potential students who may select this program- I don’t want anyone to have the study abroad experience I had.

Overall, I was exploited as free labor, where I worked a 12-hour day at the end before I had too much and decided to leave the program early. I begged with the Spain-based intern supervisor to work less hours, but he was incredibly stubborn. I felt completely helpless, even after I contacted the US Adelante office to explain my situation. Overall, the staff has poor communication skills and is very unwilling to help.

I originally went to Spain to teach English. When I arrived, I discovered that I was actually more of a babysitter, where I “taught English” to 2 and 3-year-olds… Obviously I was disapointed with my internship assignment, and I clearly told my adviser this. He gave me an incredibly hard time, and the director Kimberly Haber, did not listen to my requests either. Actually, she was very unkind and rude, telling me that I should have known that this was what I signed up for… But how could I have possibly known?

Overall, I feel exploited and am currently in the process of getting my money back through my credit card company, which has been a time-consuming project.

Please avoid getting yourself in a similar situation… Please take the “safe route” by enrolling in a study abroad program that is sponsored by a credible university! Good luck finding the perfect study abroad program for you!
