Hi everyone, I'm a high school student currently spending my sophomore year (2012-2013) studying abroad in Italy with AFS. I won a partial $2,000 Viaggio Italiano scholarship to come here. When I go back to the U.S I'm getting credit for my English literature, Chemistry and Algebra II classes I'm taking here in Italy. I was also hoping to take the AP test for Italian Language & Culture when I come home so I'll also receive credits for my Italian. However, lately I've been a little worried that my year abroad will detract from my college application? My freshman year I had a cumulative GPA of 4.0 but with my grades from Italy and missing a year of American high school I think my GPA's going to suffer. I'm worried that missing a year of high school is going to set me back with grades and SAT & ACT scores. I might not be able to take all the AP and honors classes I would have taken if I wouldn't have spent a year abroad. I was just wondering how you all think this year abroad will look on my college application and if I should be worried!

You will learn so much more by living in Italy for a year that your admissions should be enhanced. You will be a different person than your peers. Additionally, your transcript will indicate that you attended different schools. Enjoy your time. Don’t worry about college…yet.
