Study Abroad; Summer Session; Music Ensembles

Hi, I’m wondering if a current student could answer these questions for me…

  1. If I go on a summer study abroad that counts for 3 credits (intensive language in Beijing or Paris), will it count as one of my 12 semesters, and therefore, I have to take a fall/winter/spring quarter off at some point? Is it the same case for FLAG programs?
  2. Also, I happen to stumble upon the Summer Session website which states

Why Summer Session for UChicago students?

  • Get ahead on your General Education or major requirements.
  • Pick up courses that might have been overenrolled during the regular academic year or that you missed when you were on leave or studying abroad.
  • Concentrate your efforts on a particular subject.
  • Take advantage of smaller class sizes and more individualized attention from faculty and lecturers.

Do a lot of students actually do this? And again, will it count as one of my 12 semesters?

  1. Will music ensembles be counted as one of my 3 or 4 classes for the quarter? I saw that they have course numbers.

You can take summer session and graduate “early”. Not sure when the undergrads are allowed to “commence” but for the grad schools they hold the ceremony after each quarter. Yes it counts as those are real courses. My daughter might do her FL during one of the summers.

edit to add: Parent - not a current student, FYI.

  1. No, and neither does FLAG. If you pay for summer quarter (or have it paid for you via FLAG) you don't have to take a quarter off.
  2. Some people do it. Again, it won't count as one of your 12 quarters. This usually happens if people realize they absolutely need to get a class done before they can take other classes and they're running out of time. It's common to take a part time job on campus (i.e. working in a coffee shop, TAing, etc.) that covers subletting an apartment + food + the course.
  3. No, but joining one for a year is required for the music major (hence their course numbers). Note they're 000 credits.

TL;DR: we aren’t Dartmouth, summer quarters are an extra thing you can pay for if you want.

OK so Summer Session does count in terms of getting course credit applied toward your degree but doesn’t count in the sense that you can remain there 12 quarters plus a summer or two and not get kicked out before spring convocation of senior year. LOL. Nice of them. Fin. Aid. seems to be a separate application as well for summer. @HydeSnark, those part time jobs you mentioned - are those work study jobs, or open to students in general (including those not applying for Fin. Aid)? Also, do you know anyone who is opting to take a course during Summer Session (or Summer FL institute) who might also have a summer internship in the area? Would think that is an option as well. Or are internships too time-consuming to consider taking a course or two?

My D might benefit from taking her FL just in the summer(s) when she can devote the time to it (she’ll need that!) and summer session might also allow the school year to flow a bit more easily with having 3 rather than 4 courses for some quarters. But maybe we are overthinking her course load.

@JBStillFlying they’re both. I think internships + a class might be too much but guess it depends on the person. Personally I need relatively stress-less summers to recover from the school year, lol.

Thank you @HydeSnark!!!

Wait - Do you get course credit for doing summer language via FLAG?

@MindLife I don’t believe so, but it might depend on exactly what program you’re doing and what you’re trying to use the credits for.

What is FLAG
