study abroad

Does anyone have any suggestions of BFA MT programs that allow a study abroad option for a semester?
Thank you.

Not a true “semester abroad” but many of the Rider BFA MTs take part in the annual “Arts Abroad” trip during the winter “J-Term” – it is 3 weeks and involves some college credit. All the travel is arts related; they did theatre visits, museums, etc. The trip always includes London + one other city. My son’s group went to London and Istanbul, Turkey two years ago. Last year the group did London and Rome. We found it was a great way to get a mini “study abroad” experience within a BFA MT program.

Thank you.

Ithaca acting majors study in London for the first semester of their junior year; MTs go second semester of their junior year. Virtually all of them go…usually 1 or 2 don’t go for personal reasons, but most do.

Classes they take include stage fighting, Shakespeare, voice, dance, British theatre, etc. They see 25+ West End shows as part of their classes. (Ithaca has a London campus…the kids have to live in flats - no dorms - but the price is pretty comparable to the semester in Ithaca.)

Emerson also has a semester abroad, but I’m not sure how doable it is for the MTs…?

Coastal Carolina University MTs can spend a semester at the Accademia dell’Arte. CCU’s Physical Theatre majors spend their junior year there.

I believe NYU-Steinhardt has a study abroad option also a J term option

Northern Kentucky strongly encourages students, including BFA MTers, to study abroad, anywhere from a few weeks to a semester. They even have scholarships that seem easy to obtain for it. When we visited, the assistant chair of MT was quite proud of and enthusiastic about this.

Illinois Wesleyan MTers can travel during their May term. Limited scholarships are available, but they are possible.

UArts MTers can study abroad for various lengths of time. Tuition/scholarship money is reciprocal in many cases, which is nice. We’ll see how easy it is to do this soon.

At any of the programs D looked into regarding study abroad, it is advised to let advisors know at the first advising session as a freshman because it takes careful planning.

University of Michigan had a study abroad… semester option or summer course.

Elon strongly encourages study abroad and also has a J- term option.

Utah has study abroad. My daughter decided to forgo that option in favor of a “study domestically” at a summer Shakespeare program. London looked like a blast but she felt like Shakespeare would be better professionally. She can go to London for a whole lot less money in the future and she didn’t need the credits the program offered anyway.

My D went on the London Study Abroad program with the U of Utah and saw 23 shows in 6 weeks. She loved exploring London and beyond, and got a lot out of her classes (one was Shakespeare, the other Contemporary Drama). It was life-changing, as promised! I do agree with Walker1194 (hi!) it was pricey. Very. But with what we saved from her getting residency for Sophomore-Senior year, we felt it was a fair trade-off. She would love to live there after graduation if there were only a way to do it.

NYU Steinhardt students can work their schedules around study abroad because they are able to take required classes at various study abroad locations. But other than perhaps a music history class that fulfills some requirements, none of the classes are related to the major–no voice/ dance or performance classes.

Not necessarily a school related program but my D attended Music Theater Bavaria for a month last summer. It was a great experience, she learned a ton, and she got college credits for it.

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland has a 3-year-long study abroad program. (Sorry…just had to throw that in!)

James Madison is a professionally focused BA program, an allows for a semester study abroad.

WKU also has a study abroad program and it is recommended for MT students to go the spring semester of their sophomore year. However, the study abroad program is mainly for general ed classes, very few classes related to the MT major.

Thank you for all the study abroad responses. Love the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland suggestion. We actually have looked at the overseas colleges. The Scottish one looks great. sbc

@sbc - My son goes to RCS- going into his 2nd year of the MT program there. If you have any Qs, just ask!
