Does anybody know about the Amherst programs for study abroad? I know that some schools have restricted their programs based on world events. Has Amherst curtailed its programs, specifically to the Middle East? Are there any Amherst students out there who have taken advantage of the study abroad program? Is it limited to a semester, or can it be for a full year? Thanks!

There was a picture in the Amherst paper of a table set up to instruct kids about all the study abroad programs. Amherst endorses it and supports it tremendously. D, who is a freshman, has decided to do 2 semesters - 1 in Spain and 1 in Germany. She could do one year at either. From what I understand, Amherst coops with other schools and their programs, as well as their own. I think that you can go anywhere you really would like to. In another article I read, there was discussion about housing and how they took into account percentages going for study abroad in determining their numbers for housing.

I want to study in either England or Scotland. Does anyone know if these countries are available?

If any of the colleges that Amherst works with has a program there (and I would bet they just about all do), then you can apply.

A family friend's daughter who is English major in Amherst College will be going to study in England next year during her entire Junior year. The mother mentioned that it is a package set up by the agency through the school. They will pay the tuition to the college in England instead of to Amherst College, and since the school in England is tutorial system, Amherst College will credit the student a whole junior year of credit.

Oh wow, that's awesome. Yay for English majors, I guess!

I visited Amherst 2 days ago. The admissions rep said that more than 40% of students study abroad. Amherst does not offer any of its own programs. However, it has more than 150 (if not more; all of the different schools' stats are starting to blur together) pre-approved programs that offered by other schools. He also said that the faculty encourages students to study abroad so that they can acquire a global perspective.
