study abroad

I was just wondering if many Harvard students study abroad. How difficult is it to transfer credit or still graduate in time if you take a semester abroad to study or do research? I'm sure this probably depends on the concentration but if someone who actually goes to Harvard or knows anything about this could try to answer I would really appreciate it! Oh yeah, I have one more question. If you study abroad do you still have to pay Harvard tuitions while you're gone or do you only pay the fees for the program you're in. Ok, I'm really done now!

I'm not sure about the fees, but I toured Harvard and had many of the same questions you do. According to the information I gathered you enroll in a foreign university that has been approved and your credits can transfer back to Harvard therefore you still graduate on time. Also a good majority of students study abroad either in their sophomore or junior years (Don't know the exact percentage though.)

thanks, does anyone else know about this?

Yes. Our former President, Larry Summers, had made it key to increase the percentage of students who go on international experiences. This may not necessarily mean study abroad, but also volunteer/research work, etc. There is a TON of funding to go around for these programs. You'd be hardpressed not to find any. The Office of International Programs had been established when Larry stepped into office, and the former director (she just left to go to a LAC), created a FANTASTIC resource room over the past couple of years and the office has information on a chockful of programs by geographic area and the staff there is just SO HELPFUL in helping you find programs that fit your interests. I suggest, if you are a student, to stop by and chat sometime. You'd be amazed at what's out there.

If you choose to study abroad term-time, the financial aid awards that you receive at Harvard College will be awarded to you in proportion to the amount that your study abroad institution will charge you.
