study halls

My son, a high school Junior, is putting together his schedule for next year. He'll be taking 3 AP classes and one honors class plus taking calc 2 at the local college. 2nd semester will be the same, except 4 AP's instead of 3. This leaves him with 2 study halls first semester and one second semester. In light of the heavy load of course work, as a parent, I think the study halls are a good thing, enabling him to find some balance in his life. On the other hand, my son thinks that having study halls might make him look like a slacker, even though nothing could be further from the truth.

So, wise ones, what do admissions counselors think of study halls?
Thanks.

I think this belongs in the Parents Forum. My son is a senior, Took 2 APs, one honors-type course, chorus, creative writing and French first semester. That left him with a free block every other day. He has several Ecs and I thought a little study time during the day was fine. This semester he's added another college-level course, so no free blocks. I don't think one study hall is slacking. I don't know what ad coms think of study halls, but my son got into both his EA schools with good scholarships. Is waiting on the other 8 (more highly selective) schools.

There are some admissions representatives who post on CC (sadly none from Carleton), so perhaps if you post your question in the Parents Forum as bethievt suggests you might get a more "official" response.

My daughter had an office aide period as a junior, which didn't seem to have any impact. As for Carleton, they will also be looking at your son's outside activities.

Thanks for the info. I hesitated to post the question on the parent's forum because I think the answer probably varies depending on the school. I might try it anyway and see.
Thanks again!
