Study Halls

Well first I kinda had a question to go with this thread.

I picked my classes for next year today, but I'm not sure about something. The person ranked number one in my class, to my knowledge, is taking a study hall. This person has the same amount of honors classes as me(yet has straight a's). I rank 16/418 and by taking a study hall and all the extra honors classes that I'll have next year(and getting all A's) I could easily(well, maybe not easily) bump up to 1-2/418. So I wanted to know how much does taking a Study Hall affect opportunities, admissions decisions, etc?

Study hall is great for your mental health. It makes senior year slightly less stressful.

Study hall allows one to do much of their HW in school, which leaves time for other pursuits after school.

If you're a senior at my school and your study hall(s) fall towards either the beginning or end of the day, you don't have to go.

I have two study halls at each end of the day. Soo, I sleep in AND I go home early.

There is a desirable schedule: however, if a senior wants to take band (only offered first period) they can't sleep in.
But most go home two hours early. (In fact I will be doing this because I am facing the prospect of having to take three (out of seven periods) classes at my school next year: AP Composition, AP Government, and AP Physics because I will do BC Calc over the summer and I will finish Spanish Lit this year).

I wish i had a study hall :(

Heh, I have 4 tomorrow.

All ap sciences are double blocked, so every other day we get a period of study hall. It keeps me sane. literally.

Study halls are a wonderful thing. Still, they are only useful when people are actually quiet and studying. At my school it depends. Some teachers don't care whether students study, sleep, or talk. Other teachers demand complete silence. I guess it all depends on chance. Unfortunately, my current study hall is filled with freshmen-such chatty little creatures .

haha freshmen...

We don't have studies, we have frees. We just get the period off. Lots of kids go home, some go to the library, others go to the nurses office to sleep, and others do their homework or chat with friends at the cafe.

Some of the people in my grade don't have to go to school till 10:40 in the morning and then they leave early around 1:30 in the afternoon.

yeah we don't have study halls either :(
Instead I do my homework during other classes, usually the day it's due, unfortunately ..

just out of curiosity, what is everyone's schedule like?
harder classes at the beginning of the day, or vice versa, or just spread out. . or science one day, math/english another. . or what?

I have a 7 period schedule, and I start off with
1) Pre-Calculus, with the meanest teacher . . and she's not lax about tardies AT ALL .. I mean, if you get 9 tardies per semester, you lose your privelege to drive, and I never even heard of that rule until I had her.

2) AP Biology .. . good class with hilarious people, bad teacher who's very monotonous and kinda senile. Likes to pick on me because I'm the only junior taking it.

3) AP Statistics, joke class because it's a distance course, no one actually watches the tapes or anything till like the night before the quiz.

Lunch . . . I usually skip it because it's kinda early plus it's more of a freshman lunch, but I was assigned to it due to my schedule . . sometimes I skip part of 5th to go and eat with the last lunch.

4) Anatomy & Physiology, with Governor's school .. this class is completely over the internet, we have to use headphones/mikes and everything, I usually do my homework during this because she can't actually see what I'm doing. Only 5 people in the class, none of us really pay attention.

5) AP Prep English 11: JOKE class, and I love it, the teacher is constantly out of it, it's like party every day. alright alright, more like every other day.

6) Chemistry II (like ap) >. . Not a good class to be tardy too, or to skip, the teacher will flip out on you the next day if you check out without giving your homework to her first. Good teacher though, also picks on me because I'm the only junior, but it's pretty much all harmless humor, unlike ap bio's teacher.

7) And then finally, Business & Finance, which is also pretty stupid . . I didn't want to take it, but I had to because of scheduling problems .. easy A pretty much.;

so for me, harder definently during the first 1/2 of the day, except for Chemistry. A lot of seniors will check out and come just for chemistry later, because . . she just makes her class that important, and you're lost if you miss a lecture.

Alright sorry, didn't mean to make it long, but I am really curious, so as most of you all are seniors, do you check out a lot on certain days or during certain periods or attend each and every class or what's the deal, if you don't mind sharing . .?

Most electives equate to a study hall with a GPA booster.

Wow, I am surprised that some schools allow their students to leave and come back. At my school, leaving during the school day will result in suspension.

^For us it's a JUG (detention), but they don't really care about seniors who do it. I've done it many a time when I felt like making a 7-11 run instead of eating my free lunch at school.

we used to have sort of like a free period called x block...but then the administrarion took it away...yeah...they suck...

Our school doesn't discriminate with punishment lol. Some will take the risk....not me (yeah i'm a prude). I know some people will drive to the chick-fil-a across the street, go to the kmart next to the school, or go to the mall, which is also right next to the school. My school is located in an area of major distractions...

i have 11 studies a week. it's wonderful. haha.. 2 of those are gym periods that i get because i broke my foot a while back though

seniors at my school dont have studies, they have free periods, but they have to stay in school if they have any classes left that day so most just sit in the senior section and eat haha

We have a free block instead of a study hall as well, so basically, we can do anything on campus, as long as it doesn't disturb the classes. We have block scheduling on Thursday and Friday, so free periods are 85 minutes on those days. Seniors don't have to come to school until 9:25, or they can leave at 11:55, if their free block allows them to. Students can have two free periods if they are taking a class off-campus (like at a community college). Leaving in the middle of the day results in suspension.

^ Ouch. . . suspension ..
I mean, for us as long as you have a note, you're excused.. some kids just leave campus and come back after a period and dont' get caught.
