Studying Abroad as Pre-Med

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could weigh-in on how difficult it is to study abroad if you plan on applying to med school. How do the admissions officers view any classes you take abroad? Do many pre-meds go somewhere for a semester?
Thanks

They like studying abroad, so long as you got something out of it that can be related to medicine… I did a summer one, but I know plenty of kids who took a semester or even a year and were just fine with pre-med. One actually studied in south africa and got a big award for her study on violence against women there, so its what you make of it. I would just try to avoid the pre-req classes.

I studied abroad in London the first semester of my sophomore year. I did take pre-med prereqs while abroad, but my alma mater’s study abroad stuff is pretty unique. NYU operates mini-campuses throughout the world, so while I was in London I was still studying at NYU.

If you can do it, I recommend it. I got asked about it a lot on my interviews. I’m not sure that you need something “that can be related to medicine” - that being said, I had some non-medically-related volunteer experiences while in London that I ended up writing about on my personal statement.

When I said related to medicine, I meant in the sense that you can make it an argument in your application that it makes you a stronger applicant. For example, I related my chinese study abroad to diversity and such, even though I did nothing related to medicine.

Thanks a lot
