Studying Abroad/Internship over the summer

I’m an incoming freshman at UC Davis and was thinking about doing a summer abroad program for the summer. I’m not sure if I’d want to do it this year, or maybe wait next year, but I wanted to do one of the global health ones to India.

I was wondering if anyone had any information or experience with studying abroad, specifically from UC Davis. I wanted to know how much it costs, because if it’s too expensive I just won’t do it. I read online it’s about $1000, which doesn’t sound too bad, but I’m honestly shocked that it’s only $1000? I feel like it’d cost way more, right? If I go to a cheap country I know it’ll be cheaper than going to some place like Europe.

Also, is it hard to get spots to get into the study abroad program? I’d assume a lot of kids, especially pre-med ones, would want to do an internship. Thanks.

Oh and I mean for the summer of 2018, not this summer obviously

I don’t know if this answers your question, but my UCB student did an independent study program applying to London School of Economics directly, although later we learned she could have taken the same class through UCB. She did a University of Geneva class her second year through UCB.

My youngest just finished freshman year and is studying at Harvard Beijing Academy this summer. Reportedly the two best language abroad summer classes are Harvard and Princeton.

The costs of airline flights was totally outside the cost of the program/class. The program costs were a few thousand dollars, not $1000. I have heard about students who get scholarships to study abroad, but my students were not as lucky.

@RetainerBaby:
The $1000 is the Summer Abroad Fee. You have to add on Course fees/Housing fees etc… Most programs range from $6000-8000 for the summer. The one you mentioned is around $7000.00. If eligible, you can use financial aid towards some of the costs. I suggest you visit the UCEAP office at UCD when you start your classes.

My son did the domestic summer program which is in that cost range 2 years ago.
