Studying Abroad...

So I have a few questions for any upperclassmen who know about studying abroad.

Ok so first, I'm in Tisch. I've only received information about the specialized Tisch study abroad, but I believe there is just a general program for any student also right? For example I don't have to study abroad in just the theatre program, I can just do a general study abroad right?

Second, what are the chances of getting into the program? I wanted to do London in the Spring and I know that's pretty popular. Does getting your application in earlier help at all?

Any information would help-Thanks!

I know, I've read most of the stuff on the study abroad website. I was just wondering is anyone had any personal information, like on the chances and what not.

I happen to see the thread "study abroad", and I thought I might be of some help. I have two kids - one at Tisch and the other a graduate of Tisch, and they both studied/are studying abroad with NYU. The one who graduated took a Tisch Summer Study Abroad and also a semester with NYU (not Tisch) Study Abroad, and both programs were very fulfilling. The one that is currently a student is taking a Tisch Summer Study Abroad and is also planning on taking a Spring semester abroad, but it's sure yet whether it will be with Tisch or the NYU Study Abroad. There is a possibility that she might decide to take one next summer instead, but I think that she's leaning towards the Spring semester. So, in answer to your question, yes, you can study abroad in the NYU program, and it doesn't have to be in Tisch. However, there are some amazing programs that Tisch offers, and some of them are more intensive, because they're concentrated - my son has a friend who was in the RADA program, and it was great. I think that now is the time to be inquiring and looking into all of the possibilities for both Tisch and NYU study abroad, so that you can determine which program will be best suited for your interest.

Yeah, I think Tisch might have some special programs targeted towards its own students. I was a CAS student, and I studied abroad in London in the fall. I loved it. Even since then, I've been trying to get back to London. :)

Spring definitely is more competitive than the fall, so turn in your application early. If you can go in the fall, I think that's better. Fall is generally about half the size of spring, so it's easier to get more teacher attention and the field trips are funner with a smaller group.

Both the Tisch Summer Study Abroad and during the year programs also not only have Tisch students, but students in other schools at NYU and also other colleges and universities. It really all depends on the program and the mix of people, because it varies. One of my kids is currently taking aTisch study abroad program, and it's a mixed bag in terms of students - a few from Tisch, a few from other schools at NYU, and there may be a few from other colleges/universities. I also know quite a few students who are planning on studying abroad in the Fall, and my S studied in the Spring (Junior) year, and there were kids from other colleges who were also in the program. He had the option of choosing either one of the Tisch programs or the non-Tisch program, and it was a very difficult decision, because there are just so many options, and the programs and the professors and study abroad staff are amazing.

If your in Tisch and want to study abroad, you don't have to do it through Tisch. You can do any study abroad program. If you want to go to London for theatre, though, that is through Tisch (what other programs does London have, by the way?). I heard London was the most competitive (and I heard this personally from Kevin Kulke, Drama Dept. head) and that the acceptance rate is about 6 or 7/10. Programs like Ireland are 9/10 and anything else is pretty much a sure bet (of course no one knows about Shanghai yet because it is new this year). Kulke said that if you want to study abroad, there is really no reason you shouldn't be able to. Just talk to people in the drama department, advisors, etc.

Thanks so much for all the information!
I'm only studying one more year at NYU and the fall deadline is past, so that's why I want to do Spring. I originally wanted to do RADA for theatre but you have to have completed 2 years of studio, and I'm only going to be a sophomore next year.

Sup shades_children are you in med school now?
