Studying Abroad

Well, the long story of it is, I had no clue what the heck I was doing with my life when I was choosing colleges. So I'm a Macalester student. And then I decided to major in Japanese, and now I feel like if I had known I was going to be so heavy into language going in, then I never would have come here. I'm not interested in transferring, because I fear change, and I'm getting a substantial aid package here.

Anyway, I must study abroad for this major, and I'm dying to go for a year, but the problem is that our school is notoriously discouraging of year abroad programs (financial reasons? I think it's BS, personally). Are there any really intense semester programs, or has anyone here overcome the odds and gone against the administration and won? Right now I'm really not into going to Tokyo or Nagoya, which are the most popular programs, but I feel sort of stuck. I know college isn't the end of my life, but I want to have a good time and learn a lot! Thanks in advance!

P.S. I've also resolved to not make the same mistake when picking a grad school, so does anyone know off the top of her head which grad schools have excellent language/linguistics programs?

Well, I'm not sure about Macalester, but at a lot of schools, you can attend study abroad programs from other colleges. I would go to the department of study abroad (if you have one, or maybe just one of your Japanese professors to ask about study abroad options).
