I am not even sure if it is a good place for posting such discussion, but I really need help Though it may seem stupid, I study aloud and I would like to stop doing that. It is very difficult for me to get used to studying in silence, but i cannot imagine my living in college without such ability. Did you have similar problems? How did you tackle them?
Itâs not stupid. Talking out what youâre studying (I assume you mean as if youâre explaining the material to someone) is a very good way to ingrain things in your mind and focus your attention. Other than just talking softly / whispering, you could also find a private place to study (e.g. your room, or reserve a room in the library or something). If it works for you, though, donât give it up.
I read essays aloud all the time to ensure clarity and fluency; if I am in a space with other people, I just whisper/speak softly (if people give me weird looks, I donât really care but Iâve never really gotten any negative response) â your study methods wonât matter so long as youâre respectful of those around you.
For my Calculus final, I just found an empty classroom that I knew would be empty for X amount of time - my friend and I went there and took turns âteachingâ each other different topics and writing on the chalkboard as though we were an instructor. I found that incredibly helpful. Iâm not sure how prevalent empty classrooms are at your school, but at my University, certain buildings are more empty at certain times (like certain academic buildings hold early morning classes because theyâre predominantly Liberal Arts classes, while the science buildings hold more classes in the afternoons/evenings, etc.)
Yes, studies have shown that it can improve retention of material. Not a bad habit to have.
As long as youâre not doing it in the quiet floors of the library, who cares how you study if itâs effective for you?
