Studying at Reed

How much do you study at Reed on the average per day? I have heard some horror stories and would like to know what the reality might be.

well.. y'know.. I wake at 5.30, 6am (depending on how abused my snooze was..) - hit the road running trying to finish up my work from the day before..
Get to class barely in time, get assigned a whole 3 new books to read by friday. Spend an hour trying to understand the first few pages. Catch a bite and chill awhile, then hit the books again around 7:30.. and work till I fall asleep on the couch... :)

Heh... no, I don't go to Reed.. :) But couldn't pass up the opportunity to make up a horror story of my own.
I'm curious too, tho..
Anyone wanna answer? :)

I second the question. Is Reed completely overwhelming? Is there time to breathe?

oooh, I third! Also, is anybody else scared about the monstrous senior thesis thing? Just how bad is that?

Hey guys, I'm a Reedie alum from yesteryear -- living testimony to the fact that Reed is survivable. You do have to focus, and there are some hurdles along the way, not just the senior thesis (which actually was fun, even though it was a challenge) but also junior qualifying exams (which weren't fun but weren't something that most people got worked up about).

As for time to breathe, the answer is yes there is (I even have a scar or two as evidence of that), but Reedies tend to give pretty high priority to their academics.

i am a reedie from now and I love Reed. Average 7 hours of study per day is normal for me but maybe thats because i am bit of a burnout. But lets see, freshman hum reading is designed for around 3 hours per lecture for a fast reader. that means it's around 4.5 hours for rest of the mortals. Chemistry- around 2 hr per lecture and a lab report and problem set each week that sucks about 3 hours each. French journal d'abord or something 1.5 hours each day. Math problem set- its been 7 hours and have not still finished it. Even if you are some super intelligent something--around 4 hour of study is required just to stay at surface of the Ocean and not to succumb the waves God Poseidon aka your professor cruelly sends to you to drown you and wreck your sanity. And don't try ******** the professor with the paper you wrote in 2 hours or something. They all are 10000 YEAR OLD ANCIENT SPIRITS OF KNOWLEDGE WHO KNOW EVERYTHING. Literally. But if you manage to overcome their waves and gear the energy of your misanthropy, cynicism, desperation-- generated by incessant academic autoflagallation-- towards even more maschochistic goals then the SPIRITS reward you with their (usually rare) flattering comments on your assignment-- the ultimate nirvana for any mortal. Be ready to convert to this religion and revere the SPIRITS through your hard work.

cassius, is chemistry a required class?

well, no...

but you must take 2 units from the science department regardless of your major.
